Tamilya hadn’t come face-to-face with Addie since her last day as an FBI agent. She had talked via text and by phone, but Tamilya had made sure to avoid being in her presence. She just didn’t have it in her to forget everything. Addie was an attention seeking agent. Most FBI agents liked to be in the background. They would rather not have their face on TV, but then there were others. Those who wanted to move up through the ranks of the DOJ. Addie was definitely in that category. Now that she was leaving the FBI, she would definitely be looking to make a name for herself before her last day. Tamilya understood the reason Addie was coming to Hawaii, and it could certainly screw up their case.

There was no doubt in Tamilya’s mind that Addie was going to try and take over things once she got on the island. She had seen her former boss do the same kind of thing before. More than once she had taken credit for the work of others. Not once did she ever credit Tamilya when both of them knew that she had been the one to do all the research.

Add in Marcus, and she had a lot on her plate. He was in her head too much. She knew he was pissed on several levels, most of them having to do with what he saw as her mistreatment by the FBI. Truth was, she had been where Agent Smith had been more than once. She would have done the same thing. It was the only way to make sure that you got all the facts. Marcus knew that. He’d been a cop for too long not to understand that part of the job. She could go toe-to-toe with any interrogator. But for some reason, he wanted to protect her from it all. It was like he thought she was weak.

She bristled at the thought. The idea that anyone would think she was weak was enough to piss her off. But there was another problem. Sex and work rarely worked out well. The idea that he wanted her to be with him, to have a serious relationship, had her stomach clenching. She had wanted that at one time, but now…she wasn’t exactly sure. Working together wasn’t going to be good for that either. Especially since they had a bit of the same background.

There was a knock at the door, and she stared at it.

“Tamilya?”

She knew it would be him, but now she didn’t know what to say or do. If she let him in, would he press for a discussion about their relationship? She rolled her eyes. Now she sounded like an idiot. Marcus was all about work and that would come first. With the terrorist connecting everything from Virginia Star to now, they had a huge case on their hands.

She walked to the door and opened it…then lost her breath. He had showered and was wearing nothing but a pair of shorts. She was pretty damn sure he was going commando too. She wanted to slip her fingers beneath the waistband just to prove her theory. Who was she fooling? She wanted to do it for purely carnal reasons. And he knew what she was thinking from the way his nostrils flared. He definitely wasn’t making it easy on her tonight.

“What?” she asked, her voice a little more frigid than she had wanted it to sound. It was her only defense to the temptation he offered her.

If she were honest with herself, Marcus didn’t need to be standing in front of her half naked for her to want him. She’d never been an overly sexual person…until she had met him. And it wasonlyhim. She’d had one other partner in between her two relationships with Marcus, and she hadn’t been this obsessed with sex with Harry.

“I’m gonna bring this in here,” he said, motioning to the cot next to him. Yeah, there was that too. She didn’t seem to even notice anything but Marcus when he was around. And that was a problem for an agent.

“I don’t see why you’d have to sleep in here.”

He studied her for a long moment, then shook his head. “It’s not for what you think. I want to be between you and the door.”

“I can protect myself.”

“Yeah, but more than one of us can take anyone who shows up.”

Well, damn. She had to admit—only to herself once more—that she was a little disappointed. He must have sensed it because he leaned closer to whisper.

“You know there are cameras everywhere in this building. I don’t mind people knowing about us, but I definitely don’t want to be worrying about our escapades being filmed and reviewed.”

Her face heated as his mouth brushed against her cheek, then he pulled back.

The intimate moment, the little butterfly kiss, had her head spinning. Hell, she didn’t have to look down to see that her nipples were hard.

“Tammy?”

“Hmm?”

“Could you move so I can wheel this in there?” he asked, motioning to the cot again.

“Uh, yeah, okay,” she said, stepping back and letting him into her office. She moved away from the door and tried to calm her nerves. He was right. There was no way to get away with sex at work. It was unprofessional and definitely a bignofrom her. But why did the idea make her panties wet?

Because the man was driving her insane. Seriously. Last time had been bad enough, but this time it was beyond that primal need they had for each other. Now, though, there were those moments where he made her believe this would be more. He made it sound like he wanted a relationship with dates and commitments.

She squashed that idea. She didn’t need to be betrayed again by what her mother called her soft heart. Tamilya hid it for a variety of reasons. Being an FBI agent and being female was always difficult. Being black…magnified that difficulty. She couldn’t show any weaknesses—more so than any of her male counterparts. Then, Marcus had happened and then the bombing had happened. That had pushed her over the edge, and she had promised herself to never again lose her composure.

She watched as he wheeled his cot into her office. She knew resisting him now would be complicated, and her body truly didn’t want to. If she couldn’t resist him, she would just have to do her best to keep from falling for him again.

Just then, he glanced over his shoulder at her and smiled. Her heart ticked up a couple beats and her entire body was flooded with heat. It wound through her blood making her mouth water and her panties even damper.

Resisting him was definitely easier said than done.

Marcus groanedwhen he turned over in the cot and had the sun splashed directly into his eyes.
