She stood, trying to control her temper, but she felt it spiraling through her. She said nothing, but she nodded, acknowledging what he was saying. Adam stepped back and allowed her to pass. She knew he wanted to say something, but thankfully, he said nothing. As she tried to control her rage, she walked through the common area to her office. She knew without looking that Marcus had followed her. He shut the door.

“You aren’t going.”

She understood what he was saying. It wasn’t that Del had told her no. Marcus was telling her that she would not be going—even if their boss hadn’t just ordered her to stay at headquarters. Studying him, she saw he had already started preparing. He’d already pulled on his bulletproof vest and he had his side holster ready. All he needed was the helmet, but she knew he would wait until they got there for that. The fact that she wanted him even now as he stood there and ordered her to do something pushed her temper over the edge.

“You are saying I can’t go?” She pronounced every word precisely. Her family knew to be wary of that tone. She didn’t use it often because it took a lot to get her temper going. Keeping her from arresting the person who was threatening her was one thing that would do it.

“Yes. You need to stay here. Stay safe.”

“If it had been you, would you do that? Would you stay here?”

He said nothing, but she read the expression on his face and knew his answer.

“Exactly. You would go.”

“It’s different.”

“Because I’m a woman.” She sighed, as the anger seemed to filter out of her. She was damned tired of fighting this fight. Of never being able to get people to take her seriously.

“No,” he said.

Again she studied him as she crossed her arms beneath her breasts.

“So what is it?”

He opened his mouth, but there was a knock at the door seconds before it opened. Autumn popped her head in.

“Time to go, Hos,” she said with a grin. It faded when she finally read the room. “Hurry up, Floyd. Boss said we have to get going before they move.”

She left them, but also didn’t close the door. They had no privacy in this damned place. What had she been thinking? Having a relationship with someone at TFH was stupid, but making all the same mistakes with Marcus…that was asinine.

“Just go.”

He opened his mouth to argue with her, but she shook her head. “Go, because they will leave you.”

“We’ll talk when we get back.”

“Do we really have anything to talk about?”

He nodded, never taking his gaze from hers. “We have a lot to discuss, but I won’t be pushed into it when we both don’t have time to talk.”

“Just go,” she repeated.

He hesitated, then he stepped forward, close enough so she could smell his scent. That sandalwood mixed with his own personal scent. It never failed to affect her. She thought he would grab her, but he brushed his mouth over hers, tenderly, softly…just enough to entice her. Then he stepped back.

“Wewilltalk.”

Then he was gone. She sat down in her chair and laid her head on her desk. She had made so many mistakes but trusting Marcus Floyd with her heart had to be the stupidest damned thing she had ever done. And she had done it twice. Two freaking times.

She could take a lot of things in her relationships, but there were two at the top she couldn’t. Cheating, which she knew Marcus would never do. The other was not respecting her. On any level, including work. She needed a man beside her who wouldn’t keep her from succeeding and who had no problems with her career. She thought that was something she could expect from Marcus. But she had been wrong.

There was a knock at the door, and she looked up. It was Charity. “I just wanted to let you know that there were two more bombs found by the FBI.”

She sat up. “What?”

“Two bombs. Little pipe bombs, but threats were sent in beforehand, so the FBI is handling it with HPD.”

“Where?”
