He turned, releasing his hold for just a second. Then he cupped her face. “The woman wanted to kill you.”

“I know.”

“She shouldn’t be allowed to live.”

“Believe me, I understand that. But I also want the information she has. We could save so many more lives.”

“They’ll get her out of there.”

“I know. I just want to make sure we get her alive so we can get that information. She had connections to both the Russians and Chinese and who knows what else.”

He opened his mouth to argue, but the world around him started to spin. His stomach roiled. It was then he realized there was blood on his hands. He’d gotten some on Tamilya’s face. Was that her blood? He looked her over as his vision started to fade.

“Marcus?” she asked, worried. “What’s wrong?”

“You know I love you.”

He never heard her response because he started falling toward her and his world went black.

ChapterTwenty

Tamilya paced the waiting room anxious to hear about Marcus. Her nerves were beyond raw. Every time someone came in the waiting room, her heart jumped into her throat. She just kept walking around, because when she sat down, her emotions tied her in knots.

“You should get checked out,” Del said.

She cut him a look but kept on pacing. They had been diverted to Tripler Army Medical Center as Queen’s had been handling a three-car crash. She had been irritated, and she still was. He was a damned hero and he had to go to another hospital?

“I did get checked out. Doc said everything was okay.”

She didn’t stop or even slow down to answer. She had to keep moving.

You know I love you.

Those whispered words had warmed her heart, but he had said them as he was passing out. Was he in his right mind? Right now, she didn’t care. She just wanted to see him. Even if he said he didn’t mean the words now, she didn’t care. She just wanted him to be okay.

Del grunted. When Tamilya glanced at him, he was looking down at his phone.

“What?” she asked as she kept pacing.

“March is okay. She has a world class concussion.”

“Good.”

This was Addie’s fault. Everything. From the bombings to Marcus. Addie had been after her, not anyone else. Oh, she wanted the money, but she had come after Tamilya because of the hatred she felt for her. Tamilya didn’t know how she had missed it, especially after what Addie had done to her after the Virginia Star bombing. That should have been the first sign that there was something seriously wrong with her relationship with Addie. She couldn’t call it a friendship because they had never been friends. It was all her fault that people had been hurt. That Marcus had been shot.

“Stop blaming yourself.”

She tossed Del a look. Everyone else was still clearing things up. The FBI had Addie in custody, and they would handle it from this point on. Both she and Marcus would be called as witnesses, but thankfully, they wouldn’t have to be involved otherwise.

“I know what you’re going through.”

“Really?” She couldn’t keep the sarcasm out of her voice.

“You know how Emma and I met?”

She stopped and looked at him. “It was that serial killer case, right?”

He nodded. “I missed the signs, didn’t take enough precautions. She almost died because I missed the signs. I was more at fault than you’ll ever be.”
