“Not your name, but a mother knows. He’s been hiding something from me, and I knew he was tangled up about a woman.”

She didn’t know what to say to that.

“So, again, do I need a hotel room?”

She cleared her throat and drifted away from her folks. “No.”

“Good. I’m about to be dropped off at the airport. Del will be picking me up, so I will see you then.”

The phone went dead. Del held out his hand with a smirk on his face. She handed him the phone, then leaned in to whisper. “I’m going to pay you back.”

“I don’t doubt it, but believe me, it’s better than waiting. You have it all settled and things can move forward.”

“You think you’re so smart,” she said, not wanting to admit he had been right.

“Nope, I just know people and I know mamas,” he said nodding in the direction of her parents. She took the hint.

She smiled at her parents as she walked over to them, getting another hug. “You guys probably want to go home.”

“No. We’re waiting,” her mother said sitting back down. Her father joined her.

“But you’ve been at a safe house for a couple days. I thought for sure you would want to be at the house.”

“And we can wait a little bit longer to find out about Marcus,” her mother said. The tone she used told Tamilya that her mother wasn’t going to budge.

“Besides,” her father said conversationally, “I think I need to have a chat with the boy when he wakes up.”

Leave it up to her father to equate a 250-pound mountain of man meat with a boy. She understood when Ashley did it. She was his mother and would always see him as a little boy. Her father was another story.

Her mother took Tamilya’s hand. “We want to wait. This is important to your team.”

It warmed her heart to know that her mother got it. Tamilya had a solid base with her own family, but more than any other team she had worked with, she fit with TFH. They always saw her as one of their own. They were kind of an oddball group, but they were hers.

She nodded and sat down. There were low murmurs throughout the room, all the couples talking amongst themselves. Autumn plopped down beside her.

“So, wanna talk about it?”

“Not really.”

“I bet you won’t give me a date.” Autumn’s voice was filled with irritation.

Tamilya looked at her friend, then narrowed her eyes as Autumn pretended interest in her fingers.

“This is about the bet.”

She gasped, her eyes widening. The reaction was so overblown, she had to fight a laugh. “You think I want deets about your sex life because of the bet?”

Tamilya let one eyebrow rise and waited.

“Okay, that’s part of it,” Autumn said with a laugh. “The other part is that I’m your friend.”

“And?”

“And I need to live vicariously through you because I haven’t had a man in my bed for a really long time.”

Tamilya knew that wasn’texactlytrue, but she let it slide. “As a friend, I can tell you that Addie is lucky she only has a concussion and is in FBI custody.”

“Why?”
