“We told you she was fine,” the doctor said with irritation.

“Don’t trust you,” he said, his gaze drooping more. “Had to make sure you were okay, Tammy.”

“I am. Sitting out in the waiting room with everyone else.”

“Okay. Love you.”

Then before he could go completely under, she said the words she had failed to use earlier. “I love you too, you idiot. Now do what the doctor says.”

But the words were wasted, he was already under. She rose up and the doctor was already pulling his mask back up.

“Thank you.”

She nodded. “Just make sure you take good care of him.”

Then she walked out the door and back down the hall to where everyone else was waiting. Del was off to the side on the phone, but everyone else had gathered together. The only one missing now was Adam, but since he was their POC for HPD, she had a feeling he was busy with them.

“He’s going to be okay,” she said. “They’re starting on him right now. It was a through and through.”

There was a collective sigh of relief as her mother came to put her arm around Tamilya.

Del came walking forward and held out his phone. “She wants to talk to you.”

“Who?”

“Just take it.”

She took the phone and held it up to her ear.

“Hello,” a woman said on the other end.

“This is Agent Lowe.”

“Oh, good. This is Ashley Floyd.”

She blinked and then narrowed her eyes at a smiling Del. She was going to kill her boss. He just threw her to Marcus’ mother without a thought.

“I understand you got to see Marcus.”

“Yes, he’s doing fine. The wound is a through and through.” Then she realized his mother might not know what that meant. “It’s when—”

“I know what it is,” she said cutting off Tamilya. “I’m going to be on a plane here in about an hour. Del said he’s going to pick me up, but that you were staying with Marcus.”

Her anger rose and she started contemplating on how to kill Del. She knew she could hide the body. The only problem wouldn’t be fooling the authorities, but Emma. She would definitely know Tamilya was involved once she heard what Del had done.

“I was for my protection and because of the case.”

There was a long pause. “You’re telling me I have to stay at a hotel?”

“No. No, I’ll probably move back home.”

“Why?”

“Why what?’

“Why are you moving home? Listen, I know my boy and I know he wouldn’t have demanded to see you if you were just friends. He’s been pining away after you for months now.”

“He told you?”
