I put my hand up, interrupting her. “But—even though I would like that, I’ll pass. I want us all to do this together, old school style.”

“Wait. This is only their thirty-ninth wedding anniversary. It’s not a big number.”

“Exactly. They won’t be expecting anything, which will make it that much easier to pull off surprising them.”

The call gets quiet, and I see everyone making eyes at each other. “What?”

“Bill. You’re amazing. Mom is going to freak out over this.”

Mom is going to cry, and I love it. I don’t love making her cry. I’ve done enough of that, but these will be happy tears. “She’s going to be quite happy. Seems I'm becoming the favorite again.”

“Enjoy it. You never stay at the top of the list, Bill.”

Flipping Adam off, I finish my beer. “She only loves you because of all the damn grandkids you keep giving her.”

He shrugs. “How ever I gotta get there, is fine with me.” He gives a smug grin and I laugh.

“Yeah, it’s such a rough time knocking up your wife all the time. How’s your hand for nine months?” I shake my fist in the camera.

“Bro. Two words. Pregnancy sex. You’ve no idea.”

“Okay, okay! That’s enough! I don’t want to hear about my brothers having sex!”

“Why? Theyalltalk.” Tom rolls his eyes and Chess laughs.

“Yes, they do, Lion.”

I clap him on his back as we all burst into laughs and he tries not to join in. “I’m proud of you, brother. I read a scene Adley wrote the other night. Sounded oddly familiar.”

“We’re getting off topic and I have to get back to work.”

Groaning, I tease, “Yes, Triple A.” Now it’s his turn to flip me off. “Listen, look at the calendar tonight and send some dates to the sibling chat. Once we get a date, I can work on food and music, okay?”

“You got it, Billy.” Chess waves and blows a kiss to the screen. “Bye!” She drops out of the call.

“Guys, hang on.” Adam says. “I didn’t want to say anything with Francesca on the phone. Did you hear about Jackson?”

Tom and I glance at each other. “No, what?”

“He’s being considered for the head coaching job with the Warriors.”

“What? No way!” I sit forward in the chair, suddenly needing more than the almost empty beer I’m holding. “He’d have to move there!”

“I know, I-”

“And that means Francesca would move. And take my nephew!”

“Ournephew. And yes, most likely she’d go with him. She can run her firm anywhere, but it makes little sense that she’s already signing one of Jackson’s junior players now. She’d have to stick around through his senior year, right?”

“Jackson won’t leave his team.”

“He's been waiting for this chance for quite some time, though.”

“That explains why Jameson was here last week.”

“He was?”

“Yeah, Mariella and Dane were over for dinner and…” Tom drifts off.
