“Brooke?” She emphasizes it as if that will help me remember.

“Brooke’s not my girlfriend.”

“Well, she wants to be.”

“Yeah, I think she does, but I made it clear after that night you met her that I don’t feel the same.”

She studies me and the moment changes the longer she looks at me, the energy around us crackling.

“Dr. Wyatt?”

“Please don’t call me Dr. Wyatt when we’re not at the hospital. For all I care, you don’t have to call me that there either.”

“I’ve called you plenty of other things in my head, believe me,” she says, her cheeks lifting with her grin.

I can’t help it, I smile back. “I bet you have.”

“I’m attracted to you too,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper. “Even though you’ve been such a jerk.” She puts her hand over her mouth and laughs. “Wow, it feels really good to say that. The jerk part. I’ll probably regret saying the other part.”

I stare at her, my body pulsing with the desire to touch her, to claim that mouth, to—

Her shoulders lift as she drops her hand from her mouth and I force myself to look in her eyes.

“But I’ve been married to a cheater,” she says, “and there’s no way I’d ever do that to anyone.”

I swallow hard, anger and indignation flooding through me. “How anyone could ever cheat on you is beyond me.”

Her eyes heat and I drag in a deep breath.

“But we’re on the same page regarding cheating,” I say, my voice husky.

I cannot believe this conversation is happening.

She swallows and I watch the pulse in her neck flutter. “Sutton’s helping me with the divorce,” she says. “He thinks it’ll go through soon.”

“That’s great…right? If Sutton said that much, it’s true. The guy is annoyingly right about most things.”

We stare at each other for a moment, the sunset leaving streaks of color in the sky and on her face with the last light.

“I feel like I’ve already let you down. I said I’d be a friend and I haven’t done a good job of that yet,” I tell her.

She’s quiet and then lifts her shoulder in a subtle shrug. “It helps that you’ve explained yourself. I’m still having a hard time wrapping my mind around it, but…it helps.”

“I’ll try to do a better job of…everything,” I say.

She takes a step forward and my chest feels like it’s going to cave in.

“That hug was maybe the best thing I’ve ever experienced, just so you know.” Her smile is shy as she looks at me.

I hold my arms out, already anticipating the second she’ll walk into them for another hug.

She shakes her head. “No, not yet. It was a little too nice.”

I nod. “Okay. Got it. No hugs yet. But Marlow?”

She tilts her head. “Yeah?”

“The moment you’re divorced—” I leave the words hanging and the way the heat builds between us, and she swallows hard, tiny goose bumps skittering across her skin, I know she hears everything I’m not saying.
