“Sure, buddy,” I tell her, smiling.
She smiles back but shakes her head.
“Too far?”
“Yeah. We’re friends, but don’t be friend-zoning me,” she says, smirking.
And I feel like I’ve just won the fucking lottery.
CHAPTERSEVENTEEN
NO BENEFITS
MARLOW
Wyatt and I walk inside Sofie and Theo’s house, my head reeling from everything that just happened.
Wyatt isintome?
How did I not see even a single sign of this?
I look at him shyly out of the corner of my eye and smile nervously when he glances back at me. My heart is still palpitating over that hug. I didn’t see that coming either and it was…epic.
“Wyatt!” Dakota yells as she comes flying at him, her arms wrapping around his waist like a little koala. “Hiiiii,” she sings.
“Hi, Sweets,” he says, laughing as he looks down at her.
And then I hear both of them yelp and Dakota backs up with her mouth gaping and we all look at Wyatt’s pants that now have something brown dripping all over them.
Dakota gasps and covers her mouth, mumbling under her hand, “I forgot about my chocolate milk.”
She turns to me, her eyes welling with tears and I put my hand on her shoulder before rushing to get something to wipe it up.
“I’m sorry,” Dakota whispers.
“No worries,” Wyatt says.
“Easy fix,” Sofie says, tossing me a towel and then one to Wyatt.
Wyatt helps me sop up the chocolate milk from the table and the floor and then he dabs his pants.
When I get it cleaned up, I look at Dakota and she still looks crushed. I’m about to say something to her when Wyatt leans down and puts his hand on her shoulder.
“Hey, it’s just a little chocolate milk. At least it’s not horse…poo. Although you could’ve chosen a different color to spill on me…brown does make me think of you-know-what.”
She giggles when he plugs his nose and shudders.
“And you know what? That was the best hug-and-hi combo I haveeverbeen given.”
Her full cheeks lift as she smiles up at him.
Good lord, I think my ovaries just twitched.
She turns carefully and grabs her crown sitting on the dining room table.
