MARLOW

A huge part of me is protesting as we leave the guys and go to the next surprise Scarlett has for all of us.

The other, very small part of me is relieved.

Because the look Wyatt Landmark sent my way when it was announced that my divorce is final…

I swear it incinerated the pretty lacy bra and panties I’m wearing right off of me.

I remember the words he said to me that day outside Sofie’s house.

“I think you’re more than attractive. I think you’re fucking amazing. The way you’ve come in and captured the hearts of everyone here is remarkable. The way you are with Dakota, and the way you’d do anything for Sofie. I’ve noticed everything about you. Too much about you.”

And then the conviction in his eyes when he said,“The moment you’re divorced…”

He left those words hanging there and hasn’t said anything like it since, but that, combined with the fire in his eyes tonight, made it feel like a vow if ever I’ve heard one.

I shiver and Sofie puts her arm around me.

“Are you nervous to try this?” she asks.

I look around, my mind too occupied with Wyatt to realize we’ve walked into a room full of poles and mirrors.

“Oh. Wow,” I whisper.

Sofie giggles. “This should be interesting.”

We change, and the next hour is an intense class with an instructor who must have magical powers. By the time she dims the lights and turns on a new set that spotlights each one of us, calling out, “From the top,” I feel like I am one with this pole. It’s fun and I’m sure I don’t look anything close to knowing what I’m doing, but I feel beautiful and liberated when I drop back down on my feet.

Wyatt is the first one I see, his eyes swallowing me whole. He stands there, still in his dress shirt but tie gone, his hair looking like he’s run his hands through it. I gulp as he stalks toward me, forgetting everyone else in the room.

“That was…fucking incredible,” he rasps, his husky voice tugging my insides.

My mouth opens to…I don’t even know what—thank him? Whimper? Beg him to have mercy on me and stop looking like Dr. McSex?

But the commotion of Theo trying to escape with Sofie saves me.

“You are not stealing our bride during her bachelorette party and you’re not escaping your bachelor party to go off and…” Scarlett leans in to whisper loud enough for all of us to hear, “Have sex.”

“Then why did you invite me here to see her dothat?” Theo asks Scarlett, as she motions for the guys to drag him out of there.

Wyatt sends me a heated glance over his shoulder before disappearing with the guys. I wipe my face with the towel and try to calm my racing heart.

We’re all laughing as we go to the spa and shower, Scarlett apologizing again that she’s making us get ready twice. But when we come back out, there are makeup artists and hair stylists waiting to help us.

“My God, woman, what else do you have up your sleeve?” Holly asks Scarlett. “Were you afraid we’d back out of the pole dancing if you told us about it ahead of time?”

Scarlett laughs as powder is dusted on her nose. “Maybe.”

“I can’t believe how much I loved that,” Sofie says.

“Same!” I say. “I’ve never thought I could be coordinated enough to get on a pole.”

“I freaking loved it,” Holly says. “I think we need to figure out how to get a pole class going in Landmark Mountain.

April giggles. “You know who would be all about it? Peg!”

We all crack up. I don’t know Grinny’s best friends, Helen and Peg, as well as everyone else, but I’ve seen them enough around town to know they’re friendship goals. And she’s right, I can picture that little firecracker Peg whipping around a pole easier than I could’ve imagined myself on one.
