“God, I hope I have as much energy as the Golden Girls when I’m that age,” Scarlett says.

“Me too,” we all chime in.

“Your hair looks stunning, Sofie,” I tell her.

All of us have our hair down and in loose waves, but Sofie’s is up, and with her red hair, the thick braid on the side and twisted perfectly in the back, it’s enchanting.

Scarlett puts her hand over her mouth and her eyes fill. “You should do it like that for the wedding.”

“Can you fly to Colorado in two weeks?” Sofie asks the stylist, laughing.

Carla laughs. “I wouldn’t be opposed. You guys are fun.”

Scarlett points at her. “We’ll talk.” And then looks at Sofie, nodding with wide eyes as she mouths, “Let’s do it.”

It still catches me by surprise that Sofie has money now. We were both trying to make ends meet when we were in Texas. When her estranged father died, she suddenly had money. She’s still the same practical Sofie I know, but it’s so fun to see her building her dreams with the new business and marrying into a family that has charter helicopters at their disposal.

While the guys are at a swanky steakhouse, we opted to eat salads and fruit since we had appetizers with our drinks earlier, and there’s a huge charcuterie board full of delicious meats and cheeses, chocolates, and fruit. The champagne flows as we finish getting ready.

I FaceTime Dakota and she’s having so much fun, she can hardly sit still. The conversation is sweet and brief.

When I step back into my dress, I look at myself in the three-way mirror. I thought I looked my best earlier tonight, but with this hair and makeup, I feelbeautiful. Despite all the pageants I’ve won, between my mom’s comments and myex-husband’s—God, it’s good to say ex—I’ve always been more aware of my flaws than my beauty. It’s nice to look in the mirror now and like what I see. I think being content has a lot to do with that.

Sofie grabs my hand and Scarlett’s and motions for Holly and April to come close too and we huddle around her.

“I’m so happy,” she says. Her eyes fill and she shakes her head, laughing. “Gah, I am not going to make us all cry, I promise. But I love you all so much, and I’m pinching myself every day that I have this life. Thank you for being part of it with me!”

We’re all a teary mess despite her promise, but no one’s makeup gets botched over a few tears.

“Are you ready to hit the club?” Scarlett asks, lifting her hands in the air and shaking her hips.

“Saying I’m ready for bed is not the right answer, is it?” I tease.

Seriously though, at home, it would be bath and storytime and I would not be about to go dance the night away.

“Vodka Red Bull coming right up,” Holly says.

She’s not kidding. She manages to find one for me within minutes. Only in Vegas. I drink it and get a burst of energy.

Sofie pulls me close as we’re walking out.

“Hey,” she whispers. “Anything you want to tell me about you and Wyatt?”

I shake my head but can’t stop the obnoxious smile that gives me away.

She nudges me. “Thereissomething going on! What are you not saying?”

I look at her with wide eyes and still can’t get the words out.

“Youlikehim,” she says. She puts her hand over her mouth and squeals. “I can’t believe it. I mean, I can…I totally can.” She takes my hands and shakes me in a little dance.

“Hold on.” I stop and hold my hand up. “Nothing has happened—”

“Yet,” she cuts in. “Maybe nothingmuchhas happenedyet. But I saw the way he looked at you when he heard you’re divorced.”

It’s a good thing you were distracted with Theo after the poles becausethatlook was on a whole other level than the one you saw.

I wisely keep that to myself.
