“Is that code for sex?” I ask, emboldened by what Sofie said and the cocktails I’ve had tonight.

He smirks. “No, but it can be.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-TWO

BLOWN

WYATT

Her cheeks get all pink and she’s so damn cute, I can’t take it.

She groans and moves past me toward the elevator. In one stride, I’m behind her and she sways slightly. When I put my hand on her hip, she sighs.

“If you were to put all your worries aside, what would you want right now, Marlow?” I ask.

The elevator door opens and we step inside. She moves to one side of the elevator and I move to the other, facing her.

“If I didn’t have to worry about tomorrow and things in Landmark Mountain?” Her voice is tentative at first and amps up the more she says. “And that maybe I’d be ruining our friendship and, therefore, all the other new friendships I’ve made with your family and friends?”

I exhale and nod.

Her voice is quiet, but steady. “I’d want to enjoy this night with you.” Her shoulder lifts slightly.

“If we’re together tonight, will it make you run later?” I ask.

“Well, since we’re heading to my room, it’s less likely.” She tries not to smile.

I act like I’m having a lightbulb moment. “So that’s where I messed up last night…you had an easy way out.”

She rolls her eyes, but her shoulders are loosening.

“I’m just scared, Wyatt,” she says.

“I am too. I’ve never felt this way about anyone, Marlow. Ever. Nothing that even comes close. Last night only solidified what I was already feeling.”

“Are you sure we don’t need to just get each other out of our systems?”

The elevator stops and I hold the door open as she steps out, my hand going to the small of her back as we walk down the hall.

“Do you want the truth?” I ask.

We stop in front of her door and she turns and looks up at me. My hand falls from her back and I resist the urge to touch her.

“Yes,” she whispers.

“I think you’re already so deeply embedded in my system that I don’t see how I’ll ever get you out.” Her mouth parts and I put my hands on her waist, leaning in when I add, “And I don’t want to.”

“Wyatt,” she whispers, her hands landing on my chest.

“If you don’t feel the same about me, I’ll do my best to deal with it,” I tell her.

“That’s what terrifies me the most,” she says. “I think Idofeel the same.” Her eyes go wide. “This is crazy, Wyatt. We barely know each other.”

I lean in until my forehead touches hers. “I think we know all that matters about one another for now, and I’m not going anywhere. We’ll figure out the rest as we go. What do you think?”

“Yes,” she says softly. And then she says it again, with more emphasis.“Yes.”

I grin, and flustered, Marlow turns around and reaches in her tiny purse to find her room key, while I put my arms around her waist and nuzzle her neck. She laughs, fumbling to get the door open. Once we’re inside, she turns to face me, her arms winding around my neck.
