Sutton nods briskly. He’s in judicial land right now, all business.

“Do you think Ruby would be open to me looking into this?” he asks.

“100% yes,” Pierre says.

Sutton asks for details about where Ruby lives, the county, and a few other things that Pierre does his best to answer.

When I see Junior get in her face and Ruby starts to cry, I push past both of them and hurry outside. I don’t shove Junior or knock him out the way I want to, I just put my hands on both of his shoulders and move him back by about two feet. He’s so stunned, he stops his rant and I turn to face Ruby.

“I know you had it handled, but…he made you cry,” I tell her.

Her eyes are bleak and glassy as she looks up at me. “Would you get me out of here?”

“Gladly.”

I take her hand and we walk to my truck, which seems to jar Junior into action again.

“Ruby,” he says, panting behind us. “Think about what I said. Okay? You know I’m right. You can’t just leave all those animals, it’s not right. I went about this the wrong way, but I’m not heartless—”

I turn and Junior’s chest runs into my hand. “You’ve said your piece. It’s best if you get out of here. Now.”

His face curls up. Not attractive.

“What are you gonna do?” he snarls. “Beat the shit out of me? Run me out of here? I’m not intimidated by—”

I turn my back to him and open the door for Ruby and she gets inside. And then I walk around to my side and look back at him.

“You’re not worth my time. She wants to talk to you? She’ll reach out. Meanwhile, get lost.”

He sputters, looking like the cowardly little shit he is, and I drive Ruby back to the house.

There’s no satisfaction in it though, because she cries the whole way.

When I put the truck in park, I turn to face her.

“What can I do?” I ask.

“He’s right. I have to go back,” she says.

That is the last thing I want to hear.

“You want to be with Junior?”

I sound calm, but inside is an inferno.

She gives me a sharp look.

“What?” she sputters. “No!Did youhearhim?Seehim? I would rather move to the other side of the world to a hideous place with no trees or mountains or-or flowers and have no friends or any comforts whatsoever than to spendone more secondwith that lying,tiny-souled man.”

She flings her tears away and glares at me.

I stare back at her for a beat, my lips twitching.

“That was very specific,” I say.

She rolls her eyes, fighting her own smile.

“And very heartfelt,” she says, less heated now.
