“Oh, that’s right.”
I take another few bites and then can’t stand it any longer.
“Why are you being so weird?” I ask.
“Am I?” After he says it, he winces.
“You know you are.”
“I just...after yesterday and everything that happened…I thought you might need time to process some things.” He sets his food on the side table and leans forward, his forearms on his thighs.
“Quit trying to proactively make up my mind,” I say, closing my food container. I’ve lost my appetite.
He frowns. “That’s not what I’m doing.”
“Yes, it is. If I want to process things, I’ll process things. I don’t need you backing off because you think I might need to.” I lift my fingers in quotes with my last few words.
He nods. “You’re right.”
“Damn right, I am.”
He tries not to smile. “Get over here.”
I lift my eyebrows haughtily. “I thought you might need time to go without.”
His mouth falls open and he starts laughing. When I don’t budge, he lifts his eyebrows.
“If I want to go without, I’ll go without. Isn’t that how this works?” He crosses his arms, mimicking me.
“Is that how you want to play this?” I stare him down.
He grins and my stomach bottoms out.
“Not even a little fucking bit,” he says. “Please, get over here.”
And this time, I do.
CHAPTER FORTY
SUCCEEDING
SUTTON
We kiss until we’re both breathless. I have a grip on her hips and grind her over me. Her head falls back and she comes in for another kiss, her hips moving in little circles, making me so hard I can’t see straight.
The next thing I know, she’s on her feet, gathering her bag, and blowing me a kiss.
“I’ll see you in a little while, Judge Landmark. I’ll pick up Owen and see if I can talk him into skating for a while, since he’s had all weekend with the puppies.”
“I’ll come with you,” I say. “I’ll come home before you leave to pick him up.”
I can’t stop grinning at her.
She’s not completely let me off the hook yet though, and she lifts a shoulder.
“Very well,” she says.
I nod and stand up, leaning an inch from her face and stealing a quick kiss. “Very well, sweetness.”
