Full disclosure: I’m about to combust with lust for the man.

When I look at him again, his eyes are back on the road and I allow myself to study his profile for an indulgent ten seconds.

“I’ve been excited too.” My voice sounds shaky, and I clear my throat. “I’ve only been able to make it to two games so far. Christmas and New Year’s Eve,” I add.

“Those were great games,” he says.

“They were.” My voice must give something away because he looks over at me.

“You sure?” he asks, chuckling.

I make a face. “No, they totally were. My sister was just in a mood.”

“Ah. I haven’t heard much about her yet,” he says.

“She’s the oldest. Beautiful. Type A.”

He chuckles. “Seeing your planner slash manual, I’d say you might have some of those tendencies as well.”

“Hey, kettle,” I tease. “You have a more color-coded life than my sister and me combined.”

His expression is mock outrage. “What’s wrong with a little color?”

“Not a thing. It’s just entertaining that chores are grey, hockey is blue, and family events are pink.” I tap my finger to my mouth and his eyes track the movement. My cheeks heat and he turns back to the road. “Work events are green, school is red, town events are orange…”

“Sounds like you’ve got it down.” He laughs and I squeeze my legs together, my core responding a little too greedily to Sutton Landmark.

“I just have two questions,” I keep teasing. “I’m still not sure what your favorite color is, which feels wrong given how freely you use color…”

He snorts and the sound, so uncharacteristic of how he’s been with me before now, makes my heart gallop against my chest.

“And the second is…why isn’t there a color on your calendar for fun?”

That makes him laugh and again, my chest feels like a thousand birds just took flight.

“Color for fun?” he repeats.

I nod, turning to face him, my boldness kicking in even more with his guard down. “Yes! What color are date nights or, you know, nights out with your buddies?”

His eyes are still laughing even as his lips go back into their naturally sultry pout.

“Well, my brothers are usually included in anybuddyoutings…even if Blake or Pierre or whoever else also shows up.” His lips twitch. “So pink still works and is fun, I might add.”

“Ahhh. Yes, but?—”

“And I don’t really date?—”

“What?”

He shoots me a questioning look. “I don’t really date?”

“No, I heard you. I’m just saying, what? Why not?”

His lips jut out slightly in thought, and I couldn’t look away if I wanted to. This ride is turning out to be so much more informative than I expected.

“I don’t have the best track record with relationships,” he finally says. “Divorced.” He lifts a shoulder like that explains everything.

“For a long time now though, right?”
