Two Mustangs cheerleaders rush toward Felicity and hug her. Felicity returns their hugs but seems uncomfortable.

“I thought that was you,” one of them says. “We haven’t seen you around lately…think you could get us into the after-party?”

“I’m not going to the after-party this time,” Felicity says.

“Oh,” the dark-haired one pouts and then smiles brightly, “you could put in a good word for us though.” She shimmies and bumps her arm against Felicity’s. “Your brother issohot.”

Felicity’s eyes meet mine and her annoyance is easy to read. Too bad these girls don’t seem able to read the room.

The dark-haired one turns to see who Felicity’s looking at and her eyes light up.

“Hello, sexy,” she purrs. “I’m Lexi, and you are?”

Felicity rolls her eyes and I bite back a laugh.

“Sutton.” I point to Owen and for some idiotic reason say, “His dad.”

Lexi makes a show of checking out my left hand and when she doesn’t find a ring, she fans herself. “Lovea single dad.”

I glance at Owen. He’s watching with rapt attention.

The blonde one sighs and crosses her arms over her chest. “I really wanted to go to that party.”

“Don’t you have an automaticin, since you cheer for the team?” Felicity asks.

“Not always,” she says. “Last time we went, we sort of…drank too much. It cost us.”

“Ahh,” Felicity says.

“You could make me forget all about the after-party,” Lexi whispers in my ear.

I take a step back and she looks back at me like she doesn’t understand what’s happening. A frown puckers between her brows and she turns to look at her friend and Felicity. I glance over too and Felicity has her arms crossed in front of her, and she looks pissed.

“Oh!” Lexi points between the two of us. “Ohhh, I didn’t realize you two were?—”

Felicity’s arms drop in front of her and she flushes, shaking her head. “Oh, no, we’re not—” She gives me a desperate look, and I motion to the grill.

“Why don’t I check those burgers?” I say and she practically sags in relief.

“Good idea,” she says softly.

The girls see someone else they know and they wave over their shoulders, most likely off to find another way to get to the party.

She makes a derisive sound as she watches them fawn over a few guys.

“Not your favorite people?” I ask.

“They’re probably fine. It just gets old, people using me to get to my brother. It was like that even before he was famous. I guess I thought it would get better when we got older, but—” She shakes her head and makes a face. “Lexi looked like she wanted to crawl inside your skin and make herself at home.”

I swallow hard at that description and the way she licks her lips and looks me over as she says it. Like maybe she’s considering the idea herself.

I scoff and turn my focus on the grill, assessing the meat like it’s my job.

“Nah, she’s probably like that with everyone,” I say.

Felicity’s the one scoffing now. “Yeah, keep telling yourself that.”

After we’ve eaten, we walk around, the music from the nearby DJ keeping our steps brisk with the beat, and then when we’re back at the truck, Felicity pulls out a game of Yahtzee. Before we know it, the afternoon has flown by and it’s time for the game.
