Owen’s told me a few things about Micah here and there, enough for me to know he’s sometimes a rude little jerk.

“You could do that?” Owen looks at me with wide eyes.

“Absolutely.” I put my hand on his shoulder and he leans in, wrapping his arms around my waist.

“Thanks, Felicity.”

“You’re welcome, buddy.”

When we get in the truck, Sutton blasts the heat and we take off our jackets. I use mine to lean against the window and it takes a while before we get through the traffic. By the time we’re driving away from Clarity Field, Owen is sound asleep.

And to avoid any questions from Sutton about my parents, I pretend to fall asleep too.

When we pull into the driveway an hour and a half later, I’ve really fallen asleep and it’s Sutton’s hand on my shoulder that jostles me awake.

“Oh,” I whisper.

“Hey, sleepyhead. We’re home,” he says.

I stretch and look back at Owen, who is still out. I start gathering things and Sutton puts his hand on my arm.

“Leave it. I’ll take care of all this. Get some rest. You did all the packing, the least I can do is unpack everything.”

“I’ll help…”

“Please. Go to bed, Felicity. We had the best day we’ve had in a long time, and that’s all thanks to you.”

I put my hand on my heart, his words making me warm and heady. “I had a great time too,” I whisper.

His eyes are shining from the lamplight and then he moves toward Owen, unbuckling him and lifting him in his arms like he weighs nothing.

“Good night,” I say softly.

“Good night,” he says, smiling at me as he walks past.

I walk up the stairs to my room and lean back against the door after I’ve closed it behind me.

Being around Sutton is like being on a nonstop roller coaster ride for my insides. It’s queasy and exhilarating, and I never quite feel steady on my feet.

I wonder if I’ll always feel this way around him.

Once I’ve caught my breath, I move toward the bathroom and take a long hot shower, putting on a tank and shorts afterward since I’m thoroughly warmed up. I even crack the window a little to let out some of the steam from the shower. When I turn out the light to the bathroom and walk toward my bed, a flurry of movement catches my eye and I scream.

There is amouse in here.

“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” I chant.

I run around the room and scream again when the mouse runs toward me. I hear something outside but don’t take my eyes off of the mouse becausehello, a mouse could run right into my feet and please God, no.

I jump onto the bed for safety.

“Felicity, open the door,” Sutton yells.

“I can’t.”

“You…can’t? Why did you scream?”

I’m quiet for a second.
