SUTTON

I’d just managed to get Gwyneth out of the house when Wyatt texted me. It was a quick dinner, obvious to Gwyneth that I wasn’t comfortable with the drop-in at my house, and at least she didn’t prolong the matter.

WYATT

Your girl is here with us at The Dancing Emu, and a tourist stud has already hit on her. You better get over here.

She’s not my girl. Stop talking like that. And fucking take care of it. You know the tourists are only after one thing.

WYATT

Just to clarify. She’s NOT your girl, but you don’t want her spending the night with a tourist?

Fuck no. It’s not safe.

WYATT

Even if Ethan looks perfectly safe and seemed to have a pretty good strategy with his pickup line?

Who the fuck is Ethan? Is that the fucking tourist?

WYATT

Better not let Grinny hear that mouth. Or Dakota.

Shut the fuck up.

WYATT

I think someone’s feeling things he’s not admitting.

Oh, I’m thinking a lot of fucking things right now.Somehow, I manage to keep that to myself.

“Owen,” I call, “get your coat. We’re going out.”

“Well, this is a fun impromptu get-together,” Wyatt says, smirking at me.

I give him a deadly look, the kind that, as a kid, would’ve had him scrambling to get back on my good side, but the son of a bitch has gotten cocky as an adult. Especially now that he’s found love and is so supremely happy.

“I hoped you’d stay for dinner,” I say under my breath, looking at Felicity. “It was delicious,” I add.

Her shoulders stiffened when I started talking, and she focuses on her food. I don’t think she’s made direct eye contact with me since I got here and it bothers me more than I want to admit.

“Felicity?” I say, louder this time.

She looks at me then and the usual warmth I see from her is missing. I frown. Decorum keeps me from leaning in and whispering in her ear the way I want to.

“Everything okay?” I ask out loud instead.

“Everything’s fine,” she says. “Where’s Gwyneth?” She looks around, searching the restaurant for her. “She can take my seat when she gets here.”

“Gwyneth is in town?” Wyatt asks, looking at me sharply before also looking around the room.

“She surprised me by stopping by the house,” I say.

“Did you forget to add your purple night to the calendar?” Felicity says, standing up. “I’m gonna go have a drink with my friend.”

I put my hand on her arm without thinking. “I’ll buy you a drink.”
