“Why didn’t you tell me you were working forhim?” she spits out. “You know how I feel about him. How did this all come about? What exactly are you doing for him?”

I sigh and pick up a cheese slice and two crackers, taking a big bite to stall a little longer.

“I thought maybe you’d gotten past that first loss,” I say.

It’s a lie. Olivia carries grudgesforever.

She rolls her eyes. “I presented a good case and in his final instruction to the jury, I’m telling you, he slanted it in Joe Sellers’ favor.”

Maybe because he thought Joe made a better caseis what I want to say but don’t. She would not take that well. Especially not from me.

“So, what’s happening? This is why you graduated early, so you could work for Judge Landmark?”

“My finishing early had nothing to do with this job. I just wanted to be done, so I worked hard to finish. I needed a break,” I tell her.

“And…?” she prods.

“And what?”

“What are you doing for him?”

My head falls back. “Can we not talk about work tonight? This game is a big deal.”

“They’re winning,” she scoffs.

“I don’t want to miss the game.”

“Are you finding out any sordid secrets about him?” she asks under her breath. “Anything illicit under that by-the-book facade?”

His fist in my hair comes to mind, the way his body felt against me…

I swallow hard and take a long swig of my vodka tonic.

“He’s a nice man. He’s been good to me, and I like his family. You’ve met everyone tonight, right?”

“Yeah, they’re nice enough, but I don’t feel like they’re very forthcoming. When I asked something about the courthouse, it was like they shut me down.”

“What did you ask?”

“If it was still old as sin…”

“Olivia!” I glare at her. “Why would you say something so rude? No wonder they shut you down.”

“It was a legitimate question. Don’t you think the courthouse needs a major redo?”

I haven’t been inside the courthouse yet, but when I’ve passed it, I’ve thought it looks charming from the outside. Olivia doesn’t appreciate historical buildings the way I do though.

I roll my eyes. “I can’t believe you.”

“What? I’m simply stating the truth.”

“Sometimes you need to keep your thoughts to yourself.”

Now she’s rolling her eyes at me. “I’ve hardly lost a case since that first one, so I think I’m doing just fine.”

“Maybe that loss motivated you.” I lift a shoulder and stare her down when she glares at me. “Come on,” I say, after a long sigh. “Let’s watch the game.”

I don’t want to miss a second of this game, and I also can’t deal with my sister right now. She’s hard when I’m in a good headspace, and I’m still off after that conversation with Sutton. Knowing her, she’ll circle back around to my job.
