Notlovelove, but I love her for the joy she’s brought into our home.

And the cake speaks for itself.

“I’m so excited we won,” he adds.

“I am too. Your playing was stellar. I bet your dreams will be awesome tonight.”

He nods, grinning. “I bet they will. I hope your dreams are awesome too, Dad.”

My breath catches and I feel a wave of maniacal laughter bubbling up. “I think they’re gonna be, son. We better get after that sleep. It’s after ten, waypast your bedtime.”

His mouth stretches into a big yawn and his eyes are closed by the time I get to his door. I shut it and go to my room, checking out the window to see if I can catch a glimpse of Felicity. The light is on, but I don’t see her. She said half an hour, so there’s time for me to take a shower. I take the world’s fastest one and brush my teeth, eyeing myself in the mirror as Ido. I flex my chest muscles up and down—it always makes Owen laugh when I do this—and look down at my arms and abs.

I still got it.

Fuck. Who am I kidding?

Am I really doing this?

The excitement in my gut tells me I am, but since I haven’t done anything impulsive in a very long time, I will likely overthink it to death.

Later. You can do that later.

As Felicity said, we’re both adults.

But the fact that she lives here now and is nannying my son and he loves her?—

Fuck. What am I thinking?

I hear the back door and jog down the stairs to tell her we can’t do this and stop dead in my tracks when I see her. She steps out of her Uggs, her feet bare. Her long blonde waves stand out against her black shirt that hangs over one shoulder, more cleavage showing than usual. She’s not wearing a bra and my dick is freer in my sweats, rising to attention just looking at her.

She notices, her eyes taking me in, which only makes me harder. But when her gaze meets mine, her expression changes.

“Have you talked yourself out of this?” she asks.

“How do you already know me so well?”

“I’m not sure. I like how you’re such a straight shooter with me and have been from the beginning, but it also means I can read your expressions now.” She sighs and looks down, wrapping her arms around herself.

I move toward her and lift her chin. “I was about to talk myself out of it until I saw you. And only because of how much Owen loves you. I don’t want this to wreck that.”

“I hope that I can be close to Owen forever. I don’t ever want to do anything to sabotage that. We just have to agree that we won’t let that happen. We have to communicate and put himfirst. And when we’re ready to move on from this, we’ll still be friends.”

Part of me doesn’t like how easily she talks about moving on from this, but most of me is relieved.

“I can agree to that. How did you get so wise?” I ask.

She grins. “Maybe having lawyer parents who dissect everything.”

“I want to dissect everything aboutyou,” I say, laughing as I pull her against me in a hug.

I hear the intake of her breath when she feels me against her and the only thing that could stop me now is if I thought she didn’t want this.

When I pull away and brush her hair back, I lean in and kiss her. It’s softer this time. Like we have all the time in the world, even though my body could easily be talked into hard and fast and reckless.

“We’ll have to be quiet,” I tell her, taking her hand. “Do you think you can do that?”

She nods, and we walk toward the stairs. “Do you?”
