Owen is already dressed when I walk out of my bedroom.

“Good job, Ace,” I say.

He grins when I use the nickname Felicity gave him.

“I’m surprised you didn’t sleep in after your late night.”

“I woke up pumped about the game and thinking about that cake,” he says.

I laugh. “How could I forget the cake?”

He gives me an incredulous look like he can’t believe it either, and then he tilts his head. “You look pumped today too,” he says. “Are you sure it’s not about the cake?”

“You’re right.” I laugh. “It’s all about the cake.”

We’re cutting large slices when Felicity knocks twice and walks in. She flushes when she sees me, smiling shyly before squeezing Owen. She looks radiant today, like she’s been thoroughly and completely fucked.

“Cake for breakfast? What have we here?” she says. “You know what that means, right, Ace?”

“What?” Owen says, his face lighting up even more when she calls him the cute nickname.

“You’re getting extra veggies in your lunch.”

“Aw man,” he groans, but he’s laughing.

“I’ll put some Ranch in there too, don’t worry.”

“Whew,” he says.

I enjoy the cake maybe more the second time around and after I’ve brushed my teeth again, I grab my bag and hug Owen. I want to hug Felicity too, but I settle for pretending to bump into her, my arms going around her waist to steady her.

“Excuse me,” I say.

She smirks at me, lifting an eyebrow. “Clumsy this morning, Your Honor?”

“Feeling a little unsteady, like my world’s been tipped upside down.”

“Interesting. Vertigo, maybe?” she teases.

“Maybe,” I say, laughing. “Have a good day, you two.”

“You too, Dad,” Owen yells as he runs up the stairs to brush his teeth.

I take that opportunity to tug Felicity’s waist toward me and kiss her.

“Good morning,” I say against her mouth when we break apart.

“Good morning,” she whispers, breathless.

“Did you do what I asked?”

She lifts a shoulder, her expression seductive but aloof. “You’ll have to wait and see.”

She straightens my jacket and pats my chest. The whole thing is oddly domestic and I get a wave of longing. What if we could have that?

Don’t ruin this, I tell myself.

She opens the door and waves sweetly before motioning for me to go out the door. “Have the best day, Judge Landmark.”
