I texted her when I got to work, apologizing for the way the morning went, and her text back said:No need to apologize.

The rest of the morning, I was slammed, so I didn’t text her again.

I’m a little surprised when she answers.

“Hello?”

“Hey. How’s your day going?” I ask.

“I’d say it’s steadily improved since this morning.” Her tone is light, but I can tell she’s still uneasy.

“Good. Well, first, let me say that Tracy was completely out of line and I told her so.”

“You didn’t have to do that. It’s a complicated situation. I’m sure it feels weird for her to see me taking care of Owen in the house that used to be hers.”

“You’re being very generous. None of that gives her the right to be rude to you.”

I think of the argument with Tracy and hope to God she’s not going to continue fighting me on this. If I thought her desire to see Owen was genuine, I’d feel differently about all of it. She’s digging in her heels out of the blue and I don’t know why.

“What else?” Felicity says.

“What?”

“You saidfirst, let me say, so there must be something else…”

“Right. Second, but of no lesser importance, your lunches are little works of art. Owen and I talk about them often and compare notes, but I realized today that I haven’t told you enough how much I enjoy them. You’ve turned what were boring and uneventful lunches into a dailyexperience.”

She giggles.

“I mean it.”

“I’m happy you enjoy them. I didn’t realize you were so passionate about my lunches.”

“I think I’m passionate about everything where you’re concerned,” I say, and then wince.

“Well, thank you. That…means a lot.”

“Was yesterday too much?” I put my head in my free hand but keep going. “I wasn’t sure if you really didn’t see my texts last night or if you might’ve been avoiding me.”

Might as well just put it out there.

“No,” she gasps. “Sutton, I didn’t see your texts until after breakfast this morning. Oversleeping won’t happen again—I’ve got a recurring alarm set now. I didn’t realize I was so tired, but you must have worn me out.” She laughs quietly, sounding shy, and I wish she was in front of me so I could put her at ease. “And then I came in all gross and rushing around, not realizing you didn’t need me this morning.”

“There is nothing gross about you, ever. And if it had been a normal day without Tracy here, it would’ve still been fine if you overslept. Things happen. I’d like to think I’m easygoing.”

She laughs. “You are. Except in bed. And then you getbossy.” Her voice changes at the end, playful and sexy.

“Do you like it?” I ask, my voice low and raspy.

“Ireallydo. Couldn’t you tell?”

I adjust myself under my desk. “It seemed like you did in the moment,” I say. “I’m just making sure you’re still feeling that way today.”

“I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. Trust me, Ilikedit.”

“Fuck,” I whisper.

I love the sound of her laugh. It tapers off at the end with a little hum. She does it now and I smile like a fucking kid.
