“Jamison and I are proud to announce that we are…” She looks around to make sure she has everyone’s attention.
“You’re killing me. Spit it out already,” Theo says, and we all laugh.
“About to become grandparents!” she says, lifting her glass in the air.
It’s quiet for a second and then the low hum turns into a loud buzz with everyone talking at once.
Sofie:“What?”
Theo, laughing:“No way.”
Wyatt: “What do you mean?”
Marlow:“I’m not tracking.”
Sutton:“Explain thyself.”
Grinny:“Grandparents?”
Ruby just laughs and looks at Callum. I think they get it.
Scarlett looks at Owen and lifts her eyebrows. “Do you know what I’m saying?”
He opens his mouth and then stands up, leaning his hands on the table as he stares at her. “You don’t have kids, but…you have Lucia and Delgado, so…” His eyes grow huge and his mouth drops even wider.“Are you having puppies?”
She points at him. “Bingo.”
“That’spossible?” Marlow asks.
“We’re having puppies?” Dakota yells.
The table roars with laughter, and everyone throws out their questions. Scarlett shakes her head, laughing, and nudges Jamison.
“Tell them.”
“About eight weeks ago, I came home and Scarlett had a surprise for me. It was a mug that said PROUD PUPPY GRANDPA, and I couldn’t believe it either,” he says, laughing. “We should’ve gotten them fixed as soon as we found them, but it’s been a little chaotic with the lodge renovations, and honestly, I didn’t think the little stallion had it in him. I mean…I just didn’t think they had that kind of relationship.” He wipes his eyes, cracking up along with everyone else. “Lucia’s been lethargic for a while, but I’ve been exercising them more, so I just thought it was that. Turns out, our husky girl and the little stallion have been busy when they have the place to themselves.”
“Lucia and Delgado are having puppies!” Owen says, jumping up again. He looks at Scarlett and Jamison. “This is the best news I’ve ever heard. When are they coming?”
“Well, technically it could be anytime now, probably sometime in the next few days,” Scarlett says. She looks at Sutton and smiles and he groans, but he’s chuckling.
Owen’s attention snaps to his dad. He’s so excited he can barely take it.
Sutton grins over at him.
“Looks like we better get prepared for a puppy,” he says.
Owen’s fists fly in the air and his head falls back. “Yes. Yes, yes, yes!” he cries.
“It’ll still be a while before they can live at your house,” Scarlett says.
He nods, his voice shaky with excitement. “I know, but I can help take care of them if you need, and they can get to know me, and it’s perfect because my hockey schedule isn’t as crazy right now…” He runs out of air and takes a deep breath. “I mean, I have to practice for tryouts, but we’ll have time, won’t we?” He looks at me and then his dad.
I love it when Sutton’s eyes are crinkled up. His smiling eyes are right up there as my favorite, tied only with the way he looks at me in bed. They’re smiling now, and my breath catches when he includes me in the look, making me feel like I’m part of this decision.
“This is a lot of pressure for you,” he says under his breath.
I shake my head, laughing. “No, it’s not, I promise.”
