“Yeah,” I say without hesitation. “I’m good with it. I’ll call Melody right now to set it up.”

“I could just text Dorian,” Connor calls out as I head for the open door for some privacy.

“That’s okay.” I wave him off.

This is the best excuse I have to also check on her and make sure she’s doing alright after the incident in the hallway. I scroll to Melody’s number and hit the call button. It rings twice before connecting.

“Hello?” Melody’s unsure voice comes over the line.

My stomach flutters, but I ignore it. “Hey, I was wondering if we could talk.”

“Okay...”

“I, uh.” I clear my throat, trying to conjure up the right words to say. “I wanted to make sure you were okay after everything that happened today.”

“Just stupid boys.” Melody sighs. “It’s really nothing new.”

“It wasn’t right what they were saying.”

“No, but I’m not surprised. Rumors float around all the time, abouteveryone. They’re always just looking for something else to talk about.”

Her sense of maturity about the entire thing is refreshing.

“Did you get in trouble from the dean?” Melody’s voice is tinged with a touching concern.

“Nah. He just wanted to know what was going on.”

And suggest I fire you, but that’snotgoing to happen.

“Oh, that’s good.” She sounds relieved. “I guess I’ll see you at work, then?”

“Yeah. Before you go,” I stop her, my voice rushed. “Connor mentioned wanting to hang out with Dorian. I was hoping that maybe we could have dinner this Friday at my house? You’re invited as well.” The last sentence comes out before I can process what I’m saying, but it’s too late.

“Oh… Uh… We’d love to. I know Dorian has been wanting to get together with Connor since they met. He’ll be really excited when I tell him.”

“Perfect. I’ll see you then.” I hang up, my heart pounding and my palms sweaty. My chest is lighter than it has been in ages.

But I don’t look at it too closely.

Melody

Istand in front of my full-length mirror and take in my dress, the olive-colored A-line cut hovering right at my knees. “Is it too much?”

There’s no one there to answer.

Ugh.

I consider calling Fran, but who knows what she’d have to say about this dinner arrangement.

I run my fingertips along the soft material, my head spinning. I don’t want him to think that I’m trying too hard. After all, I’m almost certain that this dinner is platonic. I mean, he would’ve said if it were more. Wouldn’t he?

I suck at this.

I swallow my nerves and leave the bedroom, sliding on a pair of black flats on my way out. The house is quiet, and I find Dorian on the couch, nose deep in Harry Potter. “Are you ready?”

He looks up from the book, his eyes widening. “Why are you dressed like that?”
