“Also, you’ve proven that you have Connor in your home more so than she does. She misses and cancels. It’s another surefire point to make. I don’t know what kind of leg she really has to stand on. The woman that you’re seeing is well into her twenties. She’s not barely legal. There’s nothing wrong, except it breaks school policy.”

“So, what do I do?”

“Well, I think that’s more of a question to ask yourself,” Greg says, letting out a sharp breath. “You can try to erase the relationship to keep your job, or you can resign. Honestly, to avoid the biggest stir, I would recommend the latter. If you resign before anyone shows up to make a scene, then you’re free and clear to find another university to teach at.”

I grimace. “I don’t know if I could find one that caters to me in the same way.”

“Maybe not. But you’re overqualified in what you do, anyway. You’re a businessman, Aiden. You’ve always been a businessman.”

I shake my head, fighting the urge to argue. “I love teaching.”

“Well, maybe you should’ve thought of thatbeforeyou got involved with one of your students, Aiden. If they can prove that you saw her while she was still in your class, there’s nothing you can do about it. Your job and reputation will be toast.”

“I don’t want that.”

“Well, again, in my humble opinion, I don’t think it really matters all that much, but it’s up to you. I don’t think you should try to sweep it under the rug. But then again, you don’t know if Madeline would ever actually show up at the university with such a complaint. That’s a big move. I don’t know many women who would truly want to destroy their child’s father on that level.”

“Don’t underestimate her.”

“I don’t,” Greg says with a sigh. “But I’m just being honest with you. I’ve never seen a woman actually go to that kind of length. I mean, maybe if you were breaking the law or there was something predatory about what you were doing, but dating awoman who’s twenty years younger than you and a grown ass adult? Yeah, nothing can really be done about that.”

“Seventeen.” I grunt. “So, you think it’s fine?”

“Well, I told you what I think,” Greg says, and as he does, the door chimes. I glance up at the clock. It’s right at eight. Connor is home right on time, and he has no idea what’s happened.

“I’m going to have to let you go,” I say quickly. “He’s home, and I don’t want him catching wind of this yet. I know he’ll find out sooner rather than later, but if I can figure something out before then, that’d be best.”

“You got it. I’ll do a little more digging, but you know where I stand as of right now.” He hangs up the phone, and I set it down.

Shit. What do I do?

I don’t want to resign. Though I admit that it would be the answer to all of the questions, mostly, anyway. Not to mention, there’s also the fact that whatever comes out will affect Melody as well.

I don’t want to ruin her reputation. It would break my heart to see other professors and students judging her because of me.

And the worst part is, I had to hurt her. To break my own heart to let her go. Because Madeline might be a lot of things, but she is also right. I do have strong feelings for Melody.

I really fucked this up.

“Hey, Dad,” Connor greets me as he enters the kitchen, his voice wavering slightly. “Are you okay?”

I look up from the coffee, trying to force a smile. “Yeah...”

“I don’t know...” His voice trails off as he takes a seat beside me. “You look upset.”

“Just had something come up.”

“Yeah, Dorian told me.”

“What?” I jerk my head up.

How could she tell him what happened? Why would she do that?

“It’s not Melody,” Connor’s voice is rushed. “She didn’t like tell Dorian or anything. It just wasn’t that hard to put it all together. We know you guys were dating or something, whatever you do.” He shrugs as if that is no big deal for him. “Dorian said she was really upset tonight, and I just figured it’s because you’re not supposed to date someone who works for you.”

I frown, somewhat surprised that they’ve put that much together. “Something like that.”

“Yeah, so why don’t you just quit and be with her?”
