“I think La CuttaCorps can be of service ma’am.” Brigid is dead silent, with a beam of light across her face at the prospect. Finally, she gets brave enough to address him.

“I would have done anything, mister, sir, to help young Garet here get back to his fated mate.”

“Fated mate?” The C.O. looks more severe than I’ve ever seen before. “You let me send you in there when you have a fated mate? Was it the human you rescued?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then we better get you off planet.”

Brigid creeps closer, “So it’s true then? What they say about fated mates?”

The C.O. drops his head towards her, “There is nothing more sacred in this universe. We must protect it.”

“I need to get to Glimner, Sir. I know she’s there now. I’m requesting compassionate leave.” I say, straightening up to make the request formally.

He pauses, stern-faced over the question. “I’ll give you a month, Rex. That’s all I can do. You were lucky to find her, so make the most of it. Dismissed.”

Walking my way out of the room, I hear his words ringing through my ears.

I’m headed for uncertainty, and Glimner doesn't disappoint as the thrusters of my escort ship pull into the city’s main port.

Stepping out into the glittering streets, each lined with casinos and hotels, my mission feels more impossible by the second. Thinking about the next steps, I try running through what I do know about her.

She works for a top designer.

End of list.

It isn’t much. It isn't anything. But somewhere on this moon-turned gambling hall is my fated mate, and I won't let anything stand between us.

“Sorry, never heard of her.”says yet another failed attempt. A slight Kraaj woman slumps against the giant metal door. I swear, after weeks of looking, these places were all the same. Dark exterior with oppressive mood lighting inside, industrial vibes, and house music with no apparent beginning or end.

“If you could just listen to her description!” I try to get my claws in the door before she slams it in my face.

“I don’t hire humans, k?” She whines as I pull my leg free. The metal door slams, hushing the music along with my hopes.LEVISAGE. Just like House of Manor, and Chorloone, it’s just another dead end.

Walking up to the next house on Fashion Row, I start to wonder if I’m thinking too broadly.

The next house has a customer entrance, and walking in I find that my black fatigues aren’t exactly fashion-forward.

“My love! I will assist you!” A cheerful Alzohn man in flamboyant apparel comes my way. He snatches the measuring tape from his shoulders and starts sizing me up.

“Excuse me,” I try to interject. “I’m looking for–”

“I see you in mauve, yards of it. Don’t worry. Cazt will fix you!” I’ve had enough of his show, and grabbing him by the shoulders, I force him back an inch.

“Now look, Cazt.” I try to calm myself. He’s just doing his job, I know, but right now my job is Tania. I’ve lost too much time already. “I’m looking for a human.”

“A human!? Whatever for?”

Ignoring him, I continue, “I’m looking for a small human woman. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Wants to be a designer.”

“Then she’s wasting her time.” he scoffs. “There hasn’t been a successful human designer on Glimner in a hundred years.”

“But have you heard of her?” I demand, losing interest in politeness by the second. “Her name is Tania. She was with a designer on Kalei a few weeks ago.”

“I'm sure I wouldn't remember if I had.” He curls his upper lip, walking away.

Turning to leave, I take another strike off my list. Another day gone. Another hope gone with it.
