“No, I have not told her yet.”

“It’s because you don’t trust her,” Kalo snaps.

“No, it's because the time has not been right. I want to tell her, especially after she told me everything. It's only fair that I tell her. But I need to wait.”

“For what?”

“After the reading of the will. There is no point in telling her I'mgoing to be heir to the family but then declining the offer if things don’t look good. I will wait, go to the reading, learn who is who - and then tell her once I have decided for myself.”

“But you are going to take the position, aren’t you?”

I shrug. “I’m almost certain, yes, but I like to be one hundred percent sure. I like to have all the pieces on the board so that I know what game I'mplaying.”

Kalo sits down opposite me.

“Kalo, there was something else. I know you have pieced together a very good layout of who is who and who I can most likely put my trust in, but there is another thing I need you to look into.”

“What is it? Anything.”

“The last two days, when I was out and about, I noticed a woman following me. She isn’t trying to hide the fact that she isfollowing me, either. I was going to corner her in an alley, but decide perhaps I should find out who she is first. She is -”

“A Japanese woman?” Kalo smirks.

I stare at him, looking unimpressed.

“What is going on, Kalo?”

“Alexia is a friend of mine. She is a hired gun. She also does some private work in the security sector. I actually told her to stay out of sight, but I guess she had her own ideas.”

“You hired this woman?”

“She has been staying close to you since you got here. I was just unhappy with the idea that I couldn’t be around if something happened and you needed backup. I trust her with my life, man. You can, too.”

“You should have told me.”

“I didn’t want to bother you with it. Plus, knowing you, you would have told me not to arrange it.”

“That is what I would have done. But, in hindsight, I'mgrateful for it. I did not know my family was going to be against me being here. Any support I have is valuable. Thank you.”

“Don’t even mention it.”

“I want you there at the reading.”

Kalo pulls a sour face. “I know why you want me there, but it's going to upset many people. I’m from Hong Kong; I will not be welcome.”

“I realize that, but I want you there. I doubt they will do anything but share their annoyances at the reading.”

“I don’t like to assume anything, but alright. I will be there.”

“It's in two days. You can ride there with me. For now, I'mgoing to head back to my hotel and talk to Seraphina about her father. I need to make her think she doesn't want to kill him, at least not yet.”

“Good luck. You brought that drama upon yourself.” He snorts an indignant laugh.

“Little bird?” I call out as I walk into the penthouse.

“I’m in here.” Her voice drifts from the bedroom, then she walks out of it toward me. My lips curl into a smile. She looks incredible. Her hair is pulled up into a messy bun; the way her jeans hug her hips and cling to her legs is seductive. She is wearing an oversized pink hoodie that saysNew Yorkacross the front.

“You look like you belong in New York,” I chuckle.
