She laughs. “I thought it was cute,” she says, pulling at the front of the hoodie.

“Mm. Cute. Yes.”

She stands on her tiptoes to kiss me. I wrap my arms around her narrow waist and lift her against me.

“Do you feel like doing a bit of shopping? I have a few places I want to take you.”

“I feel like doing anything with you.” She nuzzles into my neck.

“Get your shoes on. Let’s go exploring.”

We step out onto the main street outside of the hotel. I slip my fingers into her hand, pulling her up against me. “I’m loving this place. The energy here is amazing,” she says, taking quick steps to keep up with me. I notice and slow down a little, so that she can walk comfortably.

“Would you like to live here? I mean, I now know the real reason you came here was not because you wanted to move to New York, just because of those - other reasons.”

She smiles and looks away from me. “I thought I was just coming here for that and that I would go home to Hong Kong afterward, but I have been wondering what it would be like to live here.”

“Me too. It’s very different from home.”

“Are you thinking about living here?”

“I don’t know yet. The thought has crossed my mind. I want you near me, though.”

She smiles a wide, beautiful smile that spreads across her face.

I don’t need to tell her yet about me taking the position as heir to my father’s estate. I don’t know how she will feel about it all. She might hate the idea of being that involved with the mafia. For now, I'll wait and see what reading the will show me. I might decide that this place has nothing to offer but drama. I might just head right back home to Hong Kong. Either way, I want to keep Seraphina with me.

“When does your new job start?”

She glances at me with a sour look. I laugh. “You never wanted that job, did you?”

“It’s a horrible job. I just needed to get here. I start in two weeks.”

“Don’t do it,” I say, as though it was an obvious option.

“I have to, though. I need money to stay here. I need to pay for my apartment, food and whatever else happens in New York.”

I nod, but I know I will take care of her. I don’t need to talk to her about it yet, but whether it's in Hong Kong or New York, my little bird will never have to work a day in a job she doesn't enjoy.

We spend a few hours roaming the high fashion stores along Fifth Avenue. Everything that Seraphina likes, I buy her, despite her protests, and her continuously telling me she is just browsing. I want her to feel incredible. I want to spoil her.

I tell the stores to deliver the bags directly to the hotel for us so that we don’t have to carry them around all day. Then we head over to a cafe for some food.

I choose a table out of the way from the crowds because what I want to talk to Seraphina about is not a normal conversation to be overheard by nearby people.

I hold her chair out for her and then slide it in behind her when she sits down.

Our legs touch beneath the table, and I wonder if perhaps we should just go home so that I can explore her body instead.

“Little bird, I was thinking about what you told me the other night.”

She nods. She knows what I’m talking about.

“Is it possible that death is too kind?”

Her eyes meet mine with a questioning look.

“What do you mean?”
