I press my lips against her head, closing my eyes and letting this moment imprint in my memory.

I will always take care of her. Those words will never fade away.

Our conversation flows to different things. Things about life, the future we see for ourselves, places we want to travel to, and amusing arguments about what color we would paint our bedroom.

“You still haven’t eaten,” I say, pushing myself away from her.

“No, don’t go.” She complains, with her hand against the sheets where I was lying.

I glance over at the blood stains on the bed. “I am going to warm up that food I ordered ages ago. Go hop in the shower, and I will straighten out the room.”

She sighs, rolling off the bed and heading toward the bathroom.

I neaten the room and throw fresh blankets over the bed. I imagine that housekeeping is going to be in for a bit of a surprise. I chuckle at the thought.

When she gets out of the shower, I climb in and tell her to get cozy in bed again.

After my own shower, I carry a tray of assorted sushi through to the bedroom, and we have an evening snack, lying naked on the bed, continuing our conversations until late into the night when neither of us can keep our eyes open anymore, and she falls asleep against my chest.

I wake up with my phone vibrating against the bedside table.

I pick it up and slide out of bed, and going into the living room, I answer the call.

“Yes?” I say, not sure who the unknown caller might be in the middle of the night.

“Ant, it’s me,” Kalo’s voice comes through the line.

“Kalo? What the fuck. I have been looking for you. Where are you?”

“Ant, listen, it’s bad.” This is when I notice how weak he sounds, strained, scratchy, exhausted.

“Kalo, tell me where you are,” I demand. Filled with rage.

“Ant, “There is a sudden sharp sound, and then another voice filters through the line. Clearer. Stronger. “If you don’t leave, your friend dies. I want you out of New York within forty-eight hours, Antonio.”

“Who the fuck is this?” I say with deadly calm.

“You heard me loud and clear, right? I won’t say it again.”

“You don’t know it yet, but you are already dead.”

“You have forty-eight hours.”

The line goes dead.

I try to return the call, but the number beeps, telling me it can't connect.

I have so much anger pushing through my body at this moment at the thought of where Kalo is and what they have been doing to him. I grit my teeth until my jaw screams in pain.

Then, when I brought my temper down to a functional level, I message Rei.

Me: They have Kalo. I just got the call. Threatening his life if I don’t leave. I don’t know where he is, but I am going to find out.

Rei: Send me the number they called from. I will see what I can do as well.

Me: Focus on my uncle, Lucas. He is behind this. He doesn’t seem like being the one who is the force of the operation. He wouldn’t stand a chance against Kalo in that sense, but he was orchestrating it somehow.

I message her the details. Then go back to the bedroom. My head is a war zone of thoughts, considering every angle and every option.
