I turned down the soup aisle, jumping and quickening my pace as kids shouted in the next aisle over. There were people—I was ok. But I didn’t want to go back outside.

I tucked myself into the shop’s back corner. I opened my message with Kai, debating on telling him I was too scared. I rolled my lips together—I was a big girl. I didn’t need him saving me every time.

But, as I thought of that dark sedan behind my rideshare, I decided it was better safe than sorry.

I hurriedly clicked Kai’s contact.

It rang and rang—no answer.

I clicked it again, furrowing my brows. Still no answer. My anxiety pressed down on my chest as I glanced up from myphone. The grocery store had quieted in the past few minutes. No screaming kids, no people shopping for dinner.

I glared at the little red heart next to Kai’s name and clicked it again.

“Mother fucker, answer your phone,” I yelled.

I hung up and manually dialed the number. I punched each digit in. As I pressed the green call button, his name stretched across the screen—without a heart.

On the first ring, I heard his voice.

On the first ring, a gun clicked at the back of my head.

Chapter 50

Kai

“It is almost time,” Liam said. “We just need a little bit more money stashed, and we’re good to go. I leave in a month.” His flight itinerary was outlined, skipping a few details just in case. In case we were tortured, or beaten, or killed for the information.

Carson sat crisscross on the couch, hanging on his words. There was an innocent hope in her eyes and leaned over posture. She wanted to get out of this life, had wanted to since Angel. That was her wake-up call—that was everyone’s wake-up call.

My chest rose as I inhaled. I was bored. Bored, and ridiculously preoccupied with the memory of Audry on top of me. The scent of her shampoo still lingered on my shirt, and each time I inhaled, the scent of coconut invaded me.

But she was at the hotel safe and sound.

“What about the cops?” Logan asked.

“What about them?”

“If Samuel is working with them?—”

Liam put his hand up. “I’ll agree that there’s a possibility of dirty cops. A few may be on my father’s payroll, but Nate turning up…" Liam shook his head. “That isn’t something Samuel ordered.”

“Okay, the question still stands, though.” Logan rose to his feet. “If there are dirty cops out to get us, then we need to figure out how we’ll handle them.”

“Like Mads?” Liam lifted a brow.

“No, she isn’t dirty.” Logan shook his head, and his jaw tightened.

“What’s there to handle?” I said, wanting to sidestep past the whole Mads situation. Logan was touchy about her.

“Even you know the power of the internet, technology, and a five-minute hacking video,” Logan said, waving his hand at me. “You steal more phones and wallets than anyone in this room. Dirty cops, if they are after us, will cause a whole lot of problems with our plan.”

I smirked at the compliment of my thievery. My heart hadn’t felt this light in ages.

My phone buzzed in my pocket, Audry’s name stretching across the screen.

“Hey, everything okay?” I asked.

Silence.
