Liam glanced at me, his eyebrow raised.

“Audry?” I called after her again.

A scream sounded far away, an incomprehensible conversation started up, Audry’s voice catching my ear. Another scream.

Another gunshot.

“Grocery store on sev?—”

The line went dead.

At that moment, all blood drained from my body. It pooled at my feet, anchoring me down. I normally had a cool head in situations—but not now. Now, after hearing whatever the hell that was, I froze. Sweat collected along my palms, the phone slipping to the floor. The worst images filled my mind, her blood everywhere as she was tied to Samuel’s table.

“Kai?” The world rushed forward as Logan shook me back to reality.

“Audry, she—she’s in trouble,” I mumbled, my mind catching up to the words coming out of my mouth. I ran my hand through my hair before checking my pockets for my knife and car keys.

Logan and Liam watched me before nodding to one another. “She said seventh?” Liam asked.

I tried to place where she might be. “I don’t know. It cut out. Grocery store on sev?—”

“If she was on the way over here, then it has to be Lou’s Grocery,” Logan theorized. That location made sense.

“Why would she be on the way here? I told her to stay at the fucking hotel!” I yelled. How could she be so stupid, and so careless with her life still? I told her everything, spilled some of my darkest secrets, and let her disagree with marrying me.

“I’ll see if any of the girls know what’s up,” Carson said, springing to her feet with no questions asked. She disappeared into the back room.

“I’ll check with a few people still loyal to me,” Liam said, moving to his feet. He glanced at Logan, an order in his eyes.

I shook my head, not wanting to believe it. But, just as Liam told me the other day, if it came down to it, her or me…he would make sure I wasn’t the one in the body bag. Liam disappeared, too. The sound of his car screeching off echoed through the open door.

“Let’s go,” I said, turning on my heel.

I sped down the road toward Lou’s.

“You need to keep a calm head,” Logan said.

“How the hell do you expect me to do that? Audry is in trouble…possibly dead?—”

“Give her some credit,” Logan started. “She is a survivor and a fierce woman. She isn’t dead.” He shook his head, staring out the window.

I turned the corner, throwing my car in park.

“Wait,” Logan said.

But adrenaline shot through me. I wouldn’t leave her waiting for me to show. She needed me, and I wasn’t going to waste another second.

He grabbed my bicep, tugging me back into the car. “Here.” He jutted the gun toward me. The metal barrel glistened in the light.

“I don’t use?—”

“Well, you do now,” Logan said, continuing out of the jeep. His gun clicked before he adjusted it back into his waistline.

I stared down at the weapon, swallowing down the fear.Just because I carry one in doesn’t mean I will use it.I reasoned with myself. But if I had to? Would I? Would I break my promise to Angel?

I shook my head, dismissing the thought.Stay focused, I ordered myself.

I followed Logan into the grocery store, his hand on his gun at his back.
