Kai sat up, pulling me onto his lap. “Is that okay with you? We never really discussed what it would mean for you…for your life…if you married me.”

I shrugged. “I mean…I never really wanted it in the first place. As much as they disregard Andrew, he’s way more into it than I am. Way more capable.”

My phone buzzed repeatedly on the nightstand. I leaned over, my heart dropping as I saw the name.

Sofya

Hey…I know we haven’t talked much. And that is my fault. But I’m in town and need a place to stay. Does your dad have any rooms open at The Hotel?

I promise I will catch you up on everything.

I am so so sorry for ghosting you for as long as I did.

“I, uh, I need to meet up with someone,” I said, trying to find the right words to respond to her. How did I tell her everything I wanted to without spilling Kai’s secrets?

“That’s uh, that’s fine,” Kai said, his brow furrowed at his phone. “Liam is back, which means the plan got screwed up. You go handle that, and I’ll handle this.” He kissed me on the cheek before pulling on a pair of pants.

I stared at him with wide eyes. If Liam was back, what did that mean? “We still don’t know who drudged up the body…" I whispered.

“Don’t borrow trouble,” he said. “It’s a tomorrow problem.”

“But—”

“It’s going to be okay.” Kai nodded, kissing me again. “One more thing.”

He rummaged through his bag, turning back to me. “I know, you asked me, and we already have a date for our wedding. But call me old-fashioned.” He moved down to his knee, revealing a box with a sparkling ring inside. “Inever officially asked you,and with everything going on…I just…wanted to make sure you got an official proposal.”

The stress fell away as I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I should say no to you again,” I joked.

I grabbed the ring, twisting it back and forth. It was perfect.

“It uh…it was my moms,” Kai said. “Before things were bad, you know.”

“I love it.” I passed it to him. “You have to put it on me.”

“Right, right.” His hands shook. “I haven’t done this before, so, you know…" he muttered under his breath. “Go see your friend. I’ll meet you back at your place, Audry Hayes.”

I smiled at the name…it was perfect.
