I shot a killer look at Logan, who refused to meet my stare.

“Ask, Logan. Him and Liam are the ones who hid the body,” I said, leaning back. “After all, Isuck at it.”

“Samuel will be on her trail.” Liam rubbed a hand over his lips, staring at the hardwood. His voice was so quiet, I wasn’t sure he actually said anything.

Tension blanketed us, as each of us remained quiet. Our lives hung in the balance now—we all were caught up in this mess. But he spoke the reality that neither of us were ready nor wanting to face.

“Can we get her out of town?” I asked.

Liam turned his head to face me, the expression of pity etched into his features. “It won’t matter,” he muttered.

“What about the next town over? Widows don’t operate all the way out there?” I suggested. I stood up, my skin crawling and my body itching to get out. There had to be a way out of this mess.

“It would only work short term—a day, maybe only two. It isn’t a long-term solution,” he said, rubbing a hand down his face.

“I don’t understand.” Carson raked her hand through her hair. “Logan, how the hell was it found? We’ve done this time and time again. We have it down to a science…ascience.” Carson continued to rant, the words a raspy whisper as she strained to control her anger. “What do I tell the girls? What if there’s another incident like Audry’s? Her experience isn’t exactly uncommon around here.”

Logan stood up, stalking toward the murky yellow wall. He lifted his fist up, pausing before punching. Anger faded from his expression as he turned around, replaced by confusion. “Where was the body found?”

Liam tilted his head.

“The beach. It got washed up in the tide,” I said, shrugging.

Logan’s jaw dropped; the color drained from his face. Horror froze him solid. “I didn’t…" He licked his lips, running a hand through his hair.

Liam stood up, wanting answers. His bulky frame blocked my view from Logan. I shuffled to the side and held my breath.

“I did what we always do.” He karate chopped his hand for extra emphasis. “I rotate between the six options. Six in total. The rotation is always random. I roll a dice, for god’s sake. You help me load the bodies, I drive in a direction. I roll the dice and make the decision.”

“And?” I prodded.

Logan shifted on his feet. “The ocean is never an option. The tide is too unpredictable, with all the boats and the people. The chances of a body being found increases.”

“What are you saying?” I jumped to my feet and pushed Liam aside, staring at my best friend.

“I’m saying, I didn’t dispose of the body in the water. I?—”

“Don’t tell us where,” Liam said, instituting the rules. If only one of us knew where evidence was at any given time, it gave each of us power and possible investigators a run around as they tried to figure out who knew what.

“All I’m certain of is Idid notdispose of it nearanybody of water. There’s no possible way that body turned up on the shore,” he said, throwing his hand down in front of him. He glanced at me. “I am sorry, man, but…this isn’t on me.”

Guilt twisted into Logan’s mouth as he kept my stare. I hadn’t even realized I blamed him for it being found until that moment.

Before I could respond, Liam’s phone rang. He sighed heavily and made his way downstairs, out of earshot.

“I’m sorry,” Logan said again, shaking his head.

“It’s not on you. Besides, who is to say it’s going to be linked to Audry?”

“You’re both missing the point,” Carson said, crossing her arms. With her shoulders hunched, she looked timid…small. Something I never would describe her as. “Who moved the body?”

Reality sunk in, the mystery looming, ready to hand us ropes to off ourselves with.

“Someone’s after us,” I said. “What’s new?”

Carson shared a knowing look with Logan. “You’re forgetting it wasn’t our crime that night.”

“I don’t follow.” I shook my head, tucking my hands into my pockets.
