“You…you keep trying to protect me in the worst possible ways.”

He watched me close, wanting to devour my words and understand them. But there was one last question I wanted the answer to. One final loose end. The way he answered this question would change everything about us.

“What happened to Quinton?” I whispered, the rain threatening to drown out my voice.

“He has nothing to do with this.” Kai shoved his hands in his pocket, closing me out again.

“He has everything to do with this!” I shouted. “The police officer was asking about him, demanding to know the last time I saw him. He’s involved in this. You’re involved in this.”

Kai was tight-lipped, his gaze far out into the wooded area near the property.

“See, this is what I mean. You try to protect me by keeping all these secrets,” I said. “Do you not trust that I can handle it? Do you think I’m that weak?”

“I can’t handle it!” he shouted.

Thunder exploded in the air, shaking the car.

“I can’t handle the possibility of you looking at me differently. I can’t handle having you look at me like…like I’m nothing but violence and death. I don’t want that…" He gripped his fists tight at his side. “I can handle hiding bodies, stealing cars, robbing houses…I can even handle murder. But, if you…if you were to recognize the darkness I carry around with me…if you were to see who I am…I don’t know if I could handle your disappointment.”

I shook my head. “I would never turn my back on you,” I whispered, stepping closer to him. “You never turned your back on me.”

“Quinton wasdisposedof…" Kai said, not daring to meet my eye.

“Disposed…of…" I repeated slowly, testing out the words on my tongue. “You killed my ex?” I tilted my head.

“Not before I tongued his girlfriend after he fucked you,” Kai said. “Also, it was self defense.”

I nodded slowly, trying to figure out how to feel. What was the correct reaction to have in a situation like this?

“He may have tried to stab me, and Liam might have possibly…shot him?” Kai said.

The rain slowed, only a light mist peppered us. I rubbed my temples, trying to place the pieces in order, and not throw up my entire stomach. It wasn’t like I could say much—or judge him. I’d killed, too. I’d murdered someone.

“He was an asshole,” I muttered.

“He really, truly was.” Kai nodded.

“Why did you lie to me?” I whispered. “If you knew this whole time…why not say something? Are you that afraid of who you are?” I placed my hand on his cheek, the fight falling away from me.

“If you knew all of my secrets…" he said. “If I don’t like me…if I can’t look at myself in the mirror…how can you?”

I bit at my lip, unsure how to convince him of what I saw in him. “Kai, you aren’t the man I thought I would end up with…but you’re the man of those dreams that I can’t quite remember, but I wake up changed by. Those types of dreams where I only remember the floating feeling in my stomach as if I’ve been swept away into a fairytale.”

“If we’re a fairytale, then it’s a pretty grim one,” he said.

I moved his chin, forcing him to look at me. “You’re the best prince charming I could ask for, one covered in sin and one that tastes like a sweet escape,” I whispered, keeping his stare. “So, douse me in sin.”

His hands shook as he dragged them down my body to my hips. He lifted me up, placing me on the hood of my car. Thewater was cold along my exposed thighs, but I didn’t pay much attention. Not when Kai pushed my knees apart and pressed his lips against mine.

“As you wish, M’lady,” he muttered against me before dragging his tongue along the outline of my mouth. He dragged his kiss along my chin, wrapping his hands into my hair and tugging. His teeth bit at the soft, sensitive skin of my neck.

I wanted him more than ever. Every part of him he tried to hide, every lie he showed to the world, and every violent streak he had. I didn’t want to leave him—or give up on him. He fit against me perfectly.

Kai sucked on my exposed collarbone right next to where he had nicked me with a knife. He marked me as his, something I had been dreaming about. Heat traveled down to my core as I worked on unbuckling his pants.

“Make me yours,” I whispered.

His cock sprung from the cage of his jeans at full attention. He shifted my underwear to the side, pulling me closer to him. I didn’t care that we were in front of the house, that anyone could see him claim me. It only drew more pleasure to the surface.
