“Yes, please stop it. Ishiraya will come any second now,” one of his cousins retorts.

“I thought a priest would officiate?” I ask Carus.

“Since I’m the chosen one for my line, he presents himself as a way to give his blessing to continue the bloodline.”

I nod and patiently wait for his arrival. More and more of the Ishiraya house make an appearance until the door to the temple completely closes. Once that happens, Ishiraya materializes before us, just as he did back at Karona’s temple.

The audience bows at his presence, urging us to do the same. He raises his arms for everyone to sit down. But before he lowers them, he summons a bright light that surrounds Carus and I. It’s a hazy mixture of greens and blues, giving off a warm sensation.

“It’s his magic communicating with our bond,” Carus says.

It’s a way of recognition. We don’t necessarily need his permission, but it’s just a formality for me to join the household. With this, there’ll be no opposition from anyone, not that Carus would allow it anyway.

Ishiraya lowers his hands, and the magic stops.

“Your connection is strong,” he says to us. “I expected for the magic to reject it since you were once Karona’s.”

“That wouldn’t change anything,” Carus mutters.

Ishiraya chuckles. “I’m aware of it. Before I continue, do you have vows to exchange?”

This part is the last thing everyone else will witness. Ishiraya’s magic was enough ‘proof’ for them. Once we exchange vows, the rest of the ceremony will be just us two. The mating bond goes through a ritual in order for it to be sealed together. It’s the most intimate part that can only be for our eyes only.

We both nod in response. Carus turns his attention to me with a loving gaze.

“I never believed in such a thing as a fated mate. That is, until I felt an indescribable pull that led me into that temple. The threads of destiny entangled me with just one look at you. Despite wanting to fight it at first, I’ve succumbed to it, and nothing will ever bring me more happiness than being one with you.”

Tears stream from my eyes. Without caring that everyone watches, he gently kisses them away.

“My beloved Carus, although our encounter is not something I ever expected, nor thought I wanted, I wouldn’t change anything about it. I was sheltered from the outside world and never knew any other emotions besides devotion. As much as I wanted to tear myself away from you, I simply couldn't. I can’t imagine a life that isn’t one with you to love.”

Carus pulls me in for a kiss, but he's stopped by Ishiraya’s hand.

“Save the kiss for after the sealing,” he says.

With just a wave of his hand, the rest of the audience disappears. Without another word, Ishiraya leaves as well. It’s just us in the temple. The magic circle glows brightly and a warm current courses through my body.

“Do you feel it?” Carus asks me.

I nod with excitement. Right when I think it’s over, the temple disappears, and it’s like we’re surrounded by Ishiraya’sshield again. Bright colors wave over our heads, dancing as if they are embers. They create different constellations, from each night that we lived until the day we met.

The light above swirls down around us, as if it were wrapping us up. The magic circle bursts into a blinding light, mixing with the one that surrounds our bodies.

“It’s so beautiful,” I whisper.

Carus never leaves my gaze. “It truly is.”

The light from the circle connects with the energy from our bodies. Electricity tingles from our fingertips. Carus laces our hands together.

“Priestess Shana, daughter of the sleeping one, The Mother, do you accept this mate bond?” he asks, eyes full of hope and love.

“I do. Carus Ishiraya, son of the sleeping one, The Deceiver, do you accept this mate bond?”

“A million times over, I do.”

We press our foreheads together to connect the coursing energy. A bright light shines from our heads, and there’s a burning sensation but it feels comforting. This is the sharing of our life force.

He, a dark elf, will become immensely strong, almost comparable to the Rulers. I will live as long as he does. If Carus leaves this life, I shall follow him, just as he will do the same for me.
