Ace stares up at me with a smile on his lips. He reaches up and wipes the tears from my cheeks and presses a kiss to my forehead in a gesture that makes my fucking heart explode. “I would have spent the rest of my life searching for you. Even if it meant we only had one perfect moment like this, it would have been worth it.”

I lay my head on his chest, the steady thump of his heart lulling me into a dreamless state where only he and I exist, and it’s the most peaceful I can ever remember being.

CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE

ACE

Aloud crash downstairs tears me from my sleep, and it takes me a moment to figure out where I am. I’m so used to sleeping in my shitty apartment downtown that some nights when I wake up here in the penthouse, I forget where I am.

Mia’s sprawled out beside me, her ass pressed snuggly against my cock, and that fact almost distracts me from what woke me up in the first place.

I slip from between the sheets before I can reconsider and stay curled up with Mia, and make quick work of tugging up a pair of sweatpants. Whoever the hell is making all that racket better have a good reason because I’ve killed people for less, and I would take great pleasure in killing the fucker who tore me away from my woman at an ungodly hour of the morning.

I reach into the nightstand and pull my gun out, slipping it into the back of my sweatpants. I doubt I’ll need it, because it’s probably just one of the asshole guards or a member of the Saint James family who have decided three in the morning is the perfect time to pop in for a coffee and a chat.

The entire apartment is engulfed in darkness as I slowly move downstairs, but I don’t see anyone hiding in the shadows.

Did I imagine the sound? Maybe it was part of my dream?

I shake my head. No. I don’t dream. I never have, and for that I’m fucking grateful. I would hate to think of the nightmares I would have if I did.

My bare feet hit the bottom step, and I move into the shadows, just in case there is someone here who shouldn’t be.

I’m almost ready to assume it’s not someone we know, because they would have this place lit up like a goddamn Christmas tree.

The realization that it’s not a member of the Saint James family makes me reach for my gun, but before my hand can wrap around the handle, it’s torn from my sweatpants, and the cool metal presses against my temple.

My eyes widen, and panic sets in for the briefest of moments. Not for me. But for Mia. This isn’t random. This building isn’t the type that a random thief might choose to rob.

No, the only way you’re getting in here is with knowledge and research, meaning not only is it premeditated, it’s most likely someone here to hurt my woman.

“Mr. Weber. It’s been a long time.” The voice is so familiar, it’s like I’ve heard it every day of my fucking life. But I haven’t. I haven’t heard it in a decade, and for that I’m fucking grateful.

Kyle Clark is the last person I want to speak to. Ever.

“Cat got your tongue, son?” He presses the barrel harder against my temple as if proving to me he has the upper hand like it’s not fucking obvious. “You’re probably trying to work out how we got up here, but I can easily answer that for you if you’d like.”

“Does it matter how you got here?” I snap.

“No, probably not. But I’d like to tell you regardless.” He nudges me forward until I’m standing in the middle of the apartment, staring at the stairs that lead to Mia. A very naked Mia.

My stomach sinks at the thought, at the idea that they could see her body and I wouldn’t be able to do anything to stop it. I just have to fucking hope she wakes up quickly enough to hit the panic button beside the bed.

This place is riddled with them, but by putting me in the center of the room like this, he’s cutting off my access to them and therefore rendering me more useless than I already feel.

I glance around the room as inconspicuously as I can manage, looking for anything I can use to wake Mia without drawing attention to her, but there’s nothing within reach, and that’s likely by design. Kyle isn’t an idiot, sadly. There’s a reason he got to where he did with The Factory, and a reason it still operates outside the city.

Another man comes into view, and I blink a few times to make sure the darkness isn’t playing tricks on me. It’s the asshole security guard I almost killed with my bare hands earlier for walking in on Mia and me. Fuck.

“Surprised to see me?” He smirks.

“No. I already figured out you’re a fucking moron, so this kind of tracks.”

He glares at me but makes no move to come closer, choosing instead to remain by the stairs. Exactly where I don’t want him.

“Let me guess. The package you delivered to us today was more than just a gift to fuck with us. It was a guise to allow this asshole to test how long it takes for the elevator to reach this floor and how long you would have to cut the cameras so the rest of the security team wouldn’t notice the two of you coming up here in the middle of the night?”

His face falls as I detail exactly what played out today. This idiot seems to forget I do this shit for a living. I find the holes in security so I can watch a target, survey them, and when necessary, either myself or someone I work with can sneak in and kill someone.
