This isn’t exactly my first rodeo.

“How the fuck did you know that?” he snaps, and before I can make a move, the gun is pressed harder against me, as if reminding me I’m being held at gunpoint and I should watch what I say next.

“Mr. Weber here seems to think he’s smarter than us. But he seems to forget we kept Mia from him for eight years, and no matter how hard he looked, he couldn’t find her.”

The dig is a direct hit, and I’m too fucking tempted to throw him to the ground and kill him with my bare hands. But right now, I’m the only thing standing between them and my woman, meaning I need to be on my best behavior.

The guard, Todd, I think, laughs, his head falling back as if it’s the most hilarious thing he’s ever heard in his life. This motherfucker clearly hasn’t seen The Other Guys if he thinks that’s funny.

“What do you want, Kyle?” I ask through gritted teeth.

“I’ve come to retrieve what belongs to me.”

“Nothing in this apartment is yours, so you can see yourself out.”

He chuckles, his rancid breath moving across my cheek. “Mia is mine. She always has been, and she always will be.”

I blow out a calming breath, trying desperately to hold on to some semblance of composure. “See, that’s where I’m confused. I would never let another man put his hands on my woman. Definitely not willingly. And yet, you sold Mia, more than once. And most recently to a man who was intending to marry her and pump her full of his kids. So either she’s yours or she’s not. You can’t have it both ways.”

Hands in my back are the only warning I get before I’m shoved to the ground, but I manage to catch myself and roll to my back before my face can hit the hard floor. I’ve clearly struck a nerve.

I catch sight of one of the panic buttons beneath the side table that runs along the back of the couch. It’s not far away, only a few feet, but I need a reason to go in that direction, or it will be too obvious.

I shove myself to my feet, suddenly wishing I had bothered to put a shirt on, but I didn’t expect to have these two assholes to contend with the moment I opened my eyes.

“So why would you do that, Kyle?” I sneer. “Why would you sell someone who was allegedly so important to you? Not just once, but four times?”

He advances on me like I knew he would, and I back up until I crash into the side table hard enough that the lamp balancing on the edge hits the floor in an almighty smash.

Come on, Mia. Wake up.

I slide my fingers beneath the wood as if I’m catching myself, but quickly activate the security system before either of them can notice what I’m doing.

“And you.” I turn my attention to the guard. “Do you think it’s a good idea crossing the Saint James family? I hear they pay well and offer protection to family members as part of the employee benefits.”

At this point, I’m just trying to piss them off. The angrier they are, the more noise they’re going to make, which gives me the best chance of being able to wake up Mia and get her to the panic room.

When Elijah gave us the tour on the day we moved in, I thought it was crazy to have a panic room at all in a building with so much security, but right now I’m grateful for it. Or at least I will be once Mia is tucked up inside where she’s safe.

“You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about!” Todd shouts.

I turn to Kyle, the gun at his side as he stares me down, and for a moment I worry he’s cottoned on to what I’m doing, but then he turns to the guard and laughs.

“Why don’t you answer him?” He raises a brow at the guard expectantly.

“Even if they pay well, they don’t pay as well as The Factory.”

My stomach recoils at the thought. The Saint James family may not have been my favorite people in the world prior to finding Mia, but they’re certainly not a fucking human trafficking ring.

“Plus, the perks are better.” He shrugs, and I stare at him in surprise for a moment. You’d think after all these years I’d be numb to the disgusting parts of humanity. But somehow this motherfucker has rendered me speechless. “And after I saw that tight little piece of ass you were fucking today, I asked if I could have a round before Kyle here marries her.”

Red clouds my vision, and before I’m conscious of the decision, I tackle him to the ground, my fists finding his face immediately. “You will not touch her,” I roar as I slam my fist into him over and over again. It won’t be long before Kyle tears me off him, so I need to get in all the hits I can.

“Enough!” Kyle yells, and a moment later, something heavy slams into the back of my head.

Darkness clouds my vision, and no matter how hard I fight it, I slip into the abyss.
