Now, I am curious. “I can give you an estimate.”

“Oh great,” she says brightly. “When would that be possible?”

“Can we meet tomorrow night? We have a job to finish.”

“We?”

“My brothers and I,” I explain. I sit on the edge of the porch, weirdly enjoying her husky voice.

“Is that why it’s triple L?”

“Yes, our names all start with the letter L.”

“It must be amazing to work with your brothers. I wish I could stand to be in the same room as mine,” she grumbles. “What’s your name?”

“Sorry.” I blink, totally thrown off. “Logan, my name is Logan.”

“That’s a good name. Can I ask your brothers’ names?”

“Lucas and Las.”

“Cool names. I bet Las is short for something.”

“Lasarus.”

“Is it spelled L-a-s or L-a-z?” she spells out.

“L-a-s.”

“So interesting,” she mutters.

This has to be the oddest, yet most comfortable conversation I have ever had. “I can be there tomorrow night around five,” I say, trying to get us back on track.

“Oh, awesome. The place definitely needs some work. I hope to open the bakery shortly after my friend arrives, which should be in about a month. I just got here and already stuck my foot through the floor. Ryker was helpful getting that out.”

“You need to be careful. You aren’t staying there yet, are you?” I have this insane urge to scold her for being careless.

“No, I got a room at a hotel close by. The apartment is actually in really good shape. I would like that to take priority. It would be great to stay in it instead of spending a shit ton of money on a hotel for a month.”

“I’ll take a look and give you my opinion.”

“Sounds good. I trust you.”

I shove down the word why. “What is your name?” I completely forgot to ask.

“Oh shit,” she laughs. “It’s Breeane. You can call me Bree, but can I be honest?”

“Of course,” I reply.

“I like Breeane better. My best friend calls me B sometimes. My family always calls me Bree, and it has soured it.” It is still a reflex to say it.

“I will call you Breeane.” Why do I want to please her?

“Perfect. Alright, I’ll let you go. I’m back at the motel and want to jump in the bath. My ass is killing me from the long drive.” I hear the water start. “See you tomorrow. Bye, Handsome.”

I stare at my phone. And then I stare some more.

I want to meet Breeane.
