Chapter Three

Breeane

My phone wakes me up singing about liking big butts. I groan and slide my arm from underneath me and the comfort of the warm blankets to reach it. I sleepily bring it to my ear.

“What?” I mumble.

“For a baker, you are so grouchy in the morning,” Stephanie teases.

I hate any moment in time when my sleep is interrupted. “Is that what you called to say?” I snip. So maybe I am a bit grouchy in the morning. I can fall asleep at any time of day, but do not wake me.

“Are you excited for your date with the handsome man?”

I might have called her after my phone conversation with the owner of the construction company. I might have gushed a bit about how sexy his voice was and how long it had been since someone had touched me in passion.

“I’m too tired to be excited about anything.” But I can’t ignore the spark in my stomach. I don’t know why, but his voice was too yummy, all deep and growly.

“Sure.” She laughs. “Don’t get too distracted. Pay attention to what he says about the repairs.”

“He probably is incredibly unattractive. You have nothing to worry about,” I mumble, my eyes still closed.

“What are you going to wear?”

“My jeans. The ones that make my ass look amazing. I was thinking of the flowy, off-the-shoulder top. You know the one,” I say without thinking.

“Right. Not excited at all.”

“Hush…” I whisper. “You can’t ask me questions that I should lie about the answers to when my brain isn’t functioning yet,” I scold.

“What are you talking about? You are honest all the time.”

“Whatever.”

“What are you doing today?”

“I’m going to the pool. It’s warm.” I totally deserve a day of relaxation.

“Okay, don’t forget to use sunscreen. You’ll fall asleep and burn the shit out of your skin.”

“I won’t forget.” It has happened too many times. The warmth of the sun lulls me to sleep.

“Say hello to Handsome from me. Call me when he leaves, and let me know if his face lives up to the voice.”

“You know I will.” I push at my phone and have to crack one eye open to hit the right button.

I keep it in my hand and tuck it under my body.

Just a few more minutes.

Before I can fall back to sleep, “Baby Got Back” plays again. I leave my eyes closed and hit the right button.

“I’m up,” I snap at Stephanie.

Except it’s not my best friend.

“Why would you answer the phone like that?” my mom lectures.

Shit. I jerk straight up, and the covers fall away. My heart starts to pound, and not in a good way. I hadn’t talked to her for over a month, trying to hide that I was moving. Sweat beads over my skin, hating that I didn’t get up after the first call so I would have seen who was calling.
