“Yes,” he grunts when the man holding him pulls on his arms.

“Did they explain anything to you?” Suit Man startles me by asking.

“No,” I say fast. “They busted in the door.” I don’t know what is going on, but if the dangerous man asks you a question and seems to be pissed that you were hurt, you talk.

He sighs again. “What a fucked-up mess.”

“What do you want me to do with him?” The man shakes Trevor. He’s dressed the same as his boss except with a red tie. He has blonde hair and almost black eyes.

“Hold on to him. It’s not time yet for him to die.” He leans back. “My name is Heath.”

I blink. “I’m Breeane.” I bite my lip.

“I’m aware,” he says dryly.

“Can I ask what the fuck is going on?” I don’t think he will hurt me.

“Do you know where your brother is?” Heath asks.

I jerk back. “No. I try not to talk to him.”

“He gave you up.”

“What?” I whisper.

“Caleb gave up your location and instructed me to get the money from you.”

My eyes water. “You aren’t kidding?” He shakes his head. “You are the man he owes money to?” Another affirmative shake. “You came to find me for ten grand?”

“No, I came to you for two hundred grand that he stole from me,” he says.

“What?” My heart stops.

He slips his hand in his pocket and pulls out a cigarette, lighting it and taking a pull before speaking. “Your brother is a pain in my ass. He is banned from gambling in any of my businesses. He has been kicked out many times. He did lose ten grand weeks ago.”

“Wait, wait,” I plead. “You’re Heath?”

“Yes.”

“You do the fighting rings?”

“Yes.”

“You aren’t here for Lucas?”

“Lucas?”

“Yes, he was your fighter. He left.”

“I know who he is; he’s a lion shifter. He did fight for me.” He drops his smoke and steps on it. “Listen, I don’t care who or why they fight. They make me money. I don’t get their life story. I saw that he needed an outlet, as most of them do, so I allowed him to beat the shit out of some men. His leaving was a sign that he was done. I let him go. I knew he was going to. I hoped he would because I could see he was tired. I don’t care. I have thousands of others who want to take his place. What I do have a problem with is when assholes steal from me and run away.” He leans forward, his elbows on his knees. “Lucas has nothing to fear from me, and I’m sure he is pissed as fuck right now.

“You are his mate. His brothers, too.” My jaw drops. “They are following the obvious trail these idiots left for them. I was hoping that your brother, who was also following my obvious trail, would man up and take responsibility for his fuck-up by rescuing his sister.”

“You didn’t want to hurt me,” I assume. He nods to the severed head on the ground as his answer. “You just want your money from my brother.”

“Yes, although I doubt he will do the right thing. I’m sorry you have such a horrible brother.”

“You’re sorry,” I repeat. I look around the decrepit barn around me and the men surrounding me and almost cry. I tip back my head and look at the ceiling, realizing half of it is gone. “Let me get this straight,” I start. I take a deep breath and look into the eyes of the man who can turn a cane into a whip. “You asked your men to come to my home, ask me politely to speak with you in a dilapidated barn. Instead, they hit me repeatedly and didn’t say a word about you or my brother. You let my brother follow you here after he told you where I am living now in order to get him to grow up and take responsibility.” My voice gets louder with every word. “You also know that Lucas is my mate, as are his brothers, who are on their way to rescue me from the bad guy with morals. You are talking to me calmly about this situation while my feet and hands are still tied to a chair,” I yell.
