He drops his head. “Untie her,” he orders. The man that was standing close to him walks toward me slowly and pulls out a knife. “Be careful,” Heath tells him. I stare at the top of the man's head as he removes the rope. He has brown hair and is also wearing a suit; his is blue. “Breeane,” Heath says.

I look at him. “Yes.”

“You know nothing about me. I’m sure the bear, Quinn, gave you bits and pieces of my business. I am not a nice man, I can admit that, but I didn’t want to hurt you. I trusted two men who will pay for their mistakes; one already did. The other men in this room are loyal to only me. That is why they are always near. They will not hurt you because, as I said before, I didn’t want you hurt. I expect Lucas and the others who are coming for you to be upset. Do I look scared?” He tilts his head, waiting for a response.

“No.” He doesn’t. Why?

“Only six people know what kind of shifter I am; three of them are here, and they will be the only ones that do unless your friends force me to shift.” He glares. “No one wants that. Do you understand?”

I rub my bloody, sore wrists. “I understand.” I gulp.

“So I need you to make them understand that it will be in their best interest not to attack the moment they step inside. Do you understand?” he asks again.

“Yes.” It’s my turn to glare. Now that I am fairly sure he won’t kill me, I can admit he’s super hot, even with the fierce expression, and it pisses me off to admit it.

“Good. We don’t have much time.” He closes his eyes, and his nostrils flare. “Dragons,” he mumbles. “Interesting. I knew they were here, but I didn’t believe it. They are powerful.” He blinks.

“Caleb gave me up?” I ask, ignoring his fascination with dragons, not wanting to believe it.

“He did.”

“How did he steal from you?”

“Two days after he lost the money, he took revenge. I had a man guarding my money that shouldn’t have been. Caleb took advantage of his stupidity and took it from him.” He shrugs. “We all make mistakes. I should have refused my sister’s insistence on hiring her scummy boyfriend.”

“You have a sister?” I hold my hands to my stomach when he frowns fiercely.

“Can I not have a family?”

Great, I offended him. “I didn’t mean anything by it,” I say defensively.

He waves an elegant hand. “Sometimes she also wishes she wasn’t my family.” He sighs, showing a hint of vulnerability. “Do you know where your brother hid my money?” He’s back to harsh businessman.

“No, he told me he lost ten grand. I have cut him off.” I want to be done with this shit. My face hurts, and I can feel it swelling. “Since you know everything, is Caleb close, too?” I snark.

His lips twitch. “Not close enough.” He stands slowly, and the doors to my right burst open.

“Breeane,” Lucas shouts, running.

“Holy fuck,” Logan growls when I turn.

A lion, which I assume is Las, prepares to pounce. “Stop,” I yell. They freeze. I attempt to stand but I drop back to the chair when my legs won’t hold my weight. “He didn’t do this.” I wave toward my face. “The man that is missing his head and the man that Heath’s guy is holding are the ones that hit me.”

“I left the one that did the hitting alive for you to take your anger out on,” Heath says, waving his hand.

“Should we be grateful?” Lucas spits as he continues to run over. He drops to his knees. “Fuck, Slugger.”

“I did get a few hits in, Lucas; you would have been proud.” I smile, and then wince. Handsome cups my abused face gently.

“Sugar,” he says.

“Tell Las to shift,” I demand.

“He heard,” Logan says.

“What the fuck is going on?” Lucas snarls, jumping up and rushing Heath, their faces inches apart.

“Watch yourself, Lucas,” Heath says softly, but Lucas doesn’t back away. “You can tell your friends they don’t have to hide outside,” Heath says. “The vampires are harder to track, but I’ve been around them for longer than you have been alive.”
