The others stood behind him like yes men, and I knew he wanted to provoke me. He wanted a reaction from me, but I didn’t understand why his hostility was pinned on me and Griffin specifically.

“Back off,” I muttered, pushing him back enough to get him off me. “I’m not using her for anything.”

He cocked a brow at me, seemingly taking it as a challenge. “So, you’re a liar and a shiftless loser too. It all makes sense.”

I wanted to tear into him after having to repress my anger around him, but I knew I couldn’t. There was too much at stake, and I couldn’t risk it.

Griffin was there at a moment’s notice, squaring up against Finn despite the power imbalance. He looked more ready to fight him than ever, but I couldn’t let it happen.

“Stand down, Griff,” I said, standing my ground while I held Finn’s eye contact. I didn’t want him to think I’d submit to him completely. “It’s not worth it.”

Griffin pulled back like I told him, burying his seething rage. He wasn’t one to hold it in when someone challenged him, but he knew there were more important things.

“Your guard dog has just as much of a backbone as I expected,” Finn said, still livid as he jabbed me in the chest.

I suppressed the urge to hit him back and tried to calm myself down.

“Nothing was done against her will, but the pregnancy was an accident. Me and Willow are fated mates, and we’ve known for the last five years. I have no interest in tricking anyone, and I care about her more than you think.”

“You think I’d fall for that?” Finn returned with a sharp edge to his tone. “She hated you the most out of everyone else, and now she’s suddenly in love with you? You can’t even reach your wolf. Fated mate, my ass.”

His proximity and aggravation were getting beneath my skin, making it harder for me to hold myself back.

To doubt our bond—one of the single most precious things I had in my life—without a second thought made that same rage pump through my own veins.

“And what will Willow think when you admit you knocked her up for your own personal gain?”

Forced to give in to the furious wolf inside me, I handed over the reins and shifted.

Finn jumped back the moment I reached my full form and snarled in his face, hackles raised. I pressed further into him, forcing him back several steps with his eyes wide as saucers.

Even if he had the ability to shift too, he didn’t—not while he hadn’t expected me to be able to shift at all.

“What the hell?” He managed, succumbing to my power and dominance.

Even if Kai was his alpha and not me, that sudden influx of power was too great to ignore. He had no choice but to pull back.

Finn and the others were stunned while I snapped at him and made sure he didn’t get any closer.

“How did you get it back?” Finn asked, too bewildered to carry out his ambush like he had planned. Then, his face hardened. “Unless you were lying all along about not being able to shift.”

We growled at one another, and I refused to let up. If he wanted to corner me, then he would have to face that wrath head-on.

That familiar tug of my bond let me know Willow was nearby, and I found her running over with panic written on her features. When she saw Finn and the others, her worry morphed into anger.

Before anything could happen, she put herself between us and bravely faced Finn despite his persistent anger.

“What’s going on?” She questioned, seemingly disbelieving what was unfolding.

Finn’s nostrils flared as he pointed sharply in my direction, eyes wild like his accusations. “He’s using you, and you don’t even know it.”

His words disturbed something within her, and I felt everything through our connection. Irritation emanated from her. “What are you talking about?”

There was more movement as people started to watch, and the girls appeared from various directions, all alarmed by the scene.

“The pregnancy,” Finn spat right as River came up to his side, looking just as lost as Willow. “He’s using it and you to make himself look better in everyone’s eyes.”

“What has gotten into you lately?” River snapped, sounding exasperated. “You’ve been completely unlike yourself!”
