To my surprise, I found myself enjoying her warmth, even if the topic was overly personal.

“I worked so hard on myself after we broke up,” Sara went on, looking in the distance as she spoke. “I’m just not ready for something like that, and to see him at my door…”

As she spoke, I focused on how her hip shifted beneath my touch, and my mind drifted elsewhere. She was so warm, and the glow emitted from her skin had me wishing there weren’t so many people around us.

She said we had been convincing before. With my arm snaked around her; our lips pressed together. An unspoken spark left between us.

It took everything in my power not to let it overcome me then and there.

Despite how much I wanted to feel more of her, that one word circulated within my mind.

Convincing.

Like I had been hit on the freeway, it struck me at once. That was the answer to my problem.

“Speaking of,” I interrupted, watching as Sara’s interest piqued. “Would you be willing to do me a favor?”

“And what would that be?”

Letting go a deep breath, I knew the idea was rashly put together, and there was a chance I’d wear a welt on my cheek for the rest of the night. But it was worth the risk.

“I, myself, am in a bit of a predicament. Ever since I moved here, my mom’s been pestering me with blind dates. She’s relentless. Since we did so well the other night at convincing your ex, I was thinking we could do the same to get my parents off my back.”

Sara took in every word, and she laughed quietly to herself about it. “It’s so bad, you’re willing to pretend to date me?”

“After sitting down with at least twelve women, I’ll take one fake arrangement,” I mumbled, exhausted from even thinking about it.

Her brows shot up, and she even looked empathetic. “It’s not something I imagined myself doing, but it would dismantle Ryan’s doubt about us. Maybe if he thinks it’s real, then he’ll back off for good.”

“If we’re believable enough, both our problems will be over. Everyone in Rose Valley will think we’re together.”

Sara eyed me for a moment longer, and a knowing grin crept across her lips. She held her spare hand out for me. “Fine. I’m in.”

When I took her hand, a small sensation fluttered through me, and I was more than pleased to have her agreement. “Deal.”

The tempting smile she wore made me wish there wasn’t an underlying element of lying to our arrangement and that I could kiss her without shaking the foundation of our agreement. But she was drunk, and I wasn’t quite on her level.

Even so, she looked like a dream as she giggled to herself and withdrew her arm as she sauntered away.

The moment the contact was broken, I wished to feel it again.

Chapter 9 - Sara

The Roadbar felt like paradise as I glided around the room and found the girls. Yara reached for me and pulled me closer so we could dance together. We were full of smiles and laughter. Everything felt perfect.

“I told you we’d still see each other,” I said over the music as I spun her around.

Yara glimmered from beneath the lights as she gave me an interested look. “Who were you talking to?”

The reminder of how close I had been to Griffin made my body warm up, and a part of me wished I was still over there.

While I was aware enough to know I would likely curse myself for even entertaining him once the booze wore off, I didn’t mind the thought of dancing up against him yet. It made my head feel full of a comforting haze, and my body was so incredibly light. It didn’t hurt to take in how perfect his features were.

“Just some guy,” I answered simply, hoping she wouldn’t catch on to who it really was.

Instead, Yara smiled at the prospect and continued to dance. “Sara finding herself someone new to play with? I like it.”

My cheeks warmed as I laughed it off, silently wishing I had another drink. “Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet.”
