The longer we danced, the more I felt the effects of the alcohol taking over my system. I couldn’t help but think about Griffin and the arrangement I agreed to. How I would have to pretend to be in a relationship with him. It made me wonder just how convincing we really would be. How far we’d be willing to go.

Even the idea of having his hands on me again made me melt, and I couldn’t fight the excitement. I felt so liberated. So free.

Swaying with the music, I let myself get out of hand. I stumbled through my haze, giggling to myself as my feet wobbled. I never usually got that drunk, but after everything with Ryan, I felt like I needed it.

“Whoa there,” Cora said as her hands gripped my forearms. “Be careful.”

By then, I could hardly see where I was going. The crowd was a mass of shadows, only lit up when the lights passed over them. The streaks of color made my head spin. Despite how off-putting it was, I continued to laugh at how ridiculous I felt.

“Are you alright?” She asked, just as I was able to focus on her face.

“I’m fine,” I insisted, despite clearly feeling otherwise. “Don’t worry about me.”

But her concern reached Yara, who looked at me with caring eyes. “You can hardly stand on your own, Sara.”

“Maybe you should go home and sleep it off,” Cora suggested while she helped keep me steady. “You’ll thank me tomorrow.”

I wanted to refuse, but I didn’t have the strength left in me to.

“I’d take you, but I shouldn’t drive,” Cora added, glancing around the room. “We’ll have to find someone else to.”

“Donovan was planning on taking me home once my shift was done, but I insisted I wanted to dance for a bit. I could ask him to take you,” Yara suggested.

But I shook my head. “I don’t want to bother—”

“I can take her back.”

I whirled around at the sound of that familiar voice. Meeting Griffin’s eyes, my whole body felt liquid.

“I was going to head out anyway, and she’s right next door,” he said, addressing Cora and Yara with a neutral expression.

Despite my state, I caught Cora’s apprehensive glance at Yara. I knew exactly why.

As my best friend, she was an attentive listener to many of my Griffin-bashing sessions. She heard all my complaints, even if they felt unwarranted at the moment. She knew how angry I had been with him before, and I doubted she wanted to let me go with him so easily.

It made me feel guilty as I stood between them.

“It’s fine, I’ll go with him,” I insisted to the girls, who still wore their weary expressions.

Cora sighed then, and she threw Griffin a warning look. “Take good care of her.”

I knew that expression well. Hurt her, and you’ll have to deal with me.

“I will,” Griffin said, unwavering.

The girls started dancing again as they watched him hold an arm out for me. I took it, leaning into him for support. I was grateful for it too since the room started to spin. He was the only thing keeping me upright.

Leaving the Roadbar was a blur, but once I was in his truck and the heat was put on, I was left to think about our new scheme.

If Griffin wanted to prove to his parents and Ryan that we were together, how exactly would he go about doing that? How often would we have to parade around like a couple?

I couldn’t help but wonder what it would entail.

We sat in silence as he drove, and the radio played quietly. Luckily for me, my confidence still lingered thanks to the drinks in my system. What should’ve been an awkward drive was reduced to one of the shortest ones.

Before long, the truck came to a stop outside of his house, and Griffin was outside of the passenger door. Carefully, he opened it and reached out to make sure I didn’t fall out.

His touch made a shiver run down my spine, and I found myself focusing on that feeling.
