“I developed a protective glamor that shields our neighborhood and anything pack-related from humans. They can come by and drive through and interact with us and our businesses, but they won’t have a clue about the rest. To them, we’re just humans, too, living in a normal neighborhood. As for the howling, it just sounds like wolves in the distance,” she explained, looking proud of herself.

“That’s impressive,” I commented, glad to know we were safe and the humans were too.

“In fact,” Nati began, bringing us to the main road. “Levi bought this land just for us. He takes pride in the place and ensures everyone has what they need.”

I was stunned by the thought, although it wasn’t uncommon for a pack’s property to be owned by the alpha. However, the scale of which Levi owned and how lovingly it was cared for struck me.

“That’s a lot more than most alphas would commit to their pack,” I said, considering just how different things seemed to be with Levi compared to Sam.

“Exactly. A good and just alpha is hard to come by. Levi has his priorities straightened out, though.”

We continued walking for some time until we both spotted Levi as he approached us. Surprisingly, his face wasn’t hardened with frustration or anger; if anything, he seemed more pensive.

Even seeing Levi made my chest feel light with the promise of being near him, and while it still startled me, I didn’t hate the idea of it. He looked handsome, with his hair neatly done, and he was wearing jeans and a green tee that hugged his muscles instead of his professional slacks and button downs.

Nati greeted him warmly, to which he returned the sentiment before turning to me.

“We’re heading out for the day. Ready?”

Confused, it was my turn to furrow my brows. “Where are we going?”

“Somewhere not far from here. We don’t need much. I already have everything in my Jeep,” he answered, vaguely enough not to give me any indication of how the day was about to unfold.

As lost as I felt, I didn’t have the energy to be combative, and I looked toward Nati, who was already wearing a supportive grin.

“You two have fun. I’ll see you around.”

With a nod, I followed Levi back to the house. Neither of us had much to say, and while Levi didn’t seem to be in a mood, I could tell he was in his head. I was in mine, too, busy fighting my conflicting feelings for him.

As we walked up the paved driveway, the wide garage doors opened, and a red, vintage Jeep was parked inside. The top was off, leaving the inside completely exposed. It was certainly old, but from what I could tell, he seemed to have taken great care of it.

Walking by it, I spotted a closed basket in the back, along with a rolled-up blanket.

“The guys make fun of me for keeping this old thing, but driving a luxury car through the woods isn’t my idea of a good time,” Levi said, more light-hearted than I had grown used to. He propped his door open and climbed in.

I followed, doing the same on the other side. As I buckled myself in, I felt strangely exposed without the top on. “I can see that.”

Starting the engine, Levi put his arm against the back of my seat as he reversed out of the attached garage, and while we weren’t exactly making contact, I was more than aware of how close he was. Somehow, it felt strangely intimate, and I couldn’t hide as warmth entered my cheeks.

Admittedly, I wished he was touching me.

The radio played quietly as Levi pulled onto the main road and headed south. The breeze picked up around us as he drove faster, making my breath hitch at first.

Getting used to the feeling, I let myself get comfortable as I took in the sights around us. The trees became denser as we went, and the highway eventually turned into a dirt road. Fewer houses came into view.

After some time, I glanced at him, realizing how deep into the woods we were. “Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”

“Nope.”

The answer was quick and simple as if we had known each other closely for years. It was almost playful, even. I could hardly focus due to that fact alone, unable to wrap my head around it.

Even when we were younger, I never really saw a playful side of him. He was either far too serious when it came to learning the basics of becoming an alpha or malicious when he picked on me in front of his friends. Seeing the good in someone who typically didn’t let it show wasn't exactly easy.

“Not even a hint?”

“Sorry. Nope.”

With a huff, I watched as the trees moved by us, and as annoyed by his vague answers as I felt, I couldn’t ignore the slight lift of excitement in my chest.
