I didn’t want to be suspicious of her or risk letting my mind wander with the possibilities, so I approached her, wrapped in concern.

“What’s been going on with you lately?” I asked, unable to keep it to myself any longer. “Is everything all right?”

A sheepish look immediately crossed Jane’s face as she averted her eyes, seemingly unable to look at me as she hesitated.

When she didn’t say anything, I kept snowballing. “You’ve been exhausted, you’ve been weirdly food adverse lately, and it feels like you’ve been pulling away from me. Did I do something? Are you unhappy? I don’t mean to bombard you like this, but I need to know what’s going on.”

“Levi—”

“It’s just that I assumed we were in a better place after the last few weeks, and I was under the impression that our bond was getting stronger. But it feels like you’ve been pulling away, and I don’t know what to make of it. If something’s wrong, I need you to tell me so I can try and fix it.”

With a sigh, Jane went over to the bed and sat herself down, eyes on the floor beneath her feet. “It’s nothing like that,” she said, unable to hold back an amused grin as she looked at me again.

I felt even more confused as she looked so unaffected, clearly not seeing things as seriously as I did.

“What do you mean?” I asked, completely lost.

Jane held out her hand for mine in a silent request, and when I took it, she gently urged me to sit next to her. Feeling as the mattress dipped beneath me, I met her gaze, more determined than ever to understand what was happening and why she was dancing around it.

“You’ve been noticing all this because I haven’t been feeling well. I’m pregnant, Levi.”

I could’ve sworn I felt time itself stand still as I blinked back at her in complete disbelief. I silently questioned if I hadn’t heard her right, but as I sat there and tried to let it sink in, her growing smile only confirmed it.

“You are?” I asked, voice quieter than I anticipated in quite surprise. I could feel myself softening at the very idea.

Jane nodded and placed a hand over her stomach. “I am. Nati confirmed it for me last week.”

As much as I wanted to be upset with her for not telling me right away, it didn’t seem to matter as that pure joy and excitement set in. That affection I had for her blossomed within me.

“So soon?” I questioned, struggling to believe how simple it seemed to be.

I had heard stories of mates trying for quite some time before they were ever given a baby, and that had rooted a fear deep within me. Fortunately, it seemed our union truly was blessed.

Jane was carrying my baby. My heir.

As I sat next to her with the news freshly in my mind, I was able to catch a different scent from her. One that gave away how her body was already changing. Truthfully, I had noticed that scent before, but since it was new to me, I didn’t realize what that meant.

There was no denying how that smell appeased my inner wolf, and even just picturing her much more swollen with my child stirred that desire within me.

She was my mate, and knowing she was pregnant was enough to send those instincts into overdrive.

When she nodded again, I caught as her smile seemed to slip, and my curiosity got the better of me.

“That’s incredible news. What’s the matter?”

Jane sighed and looked away. There was no missing the slight veil of fear that hung over her.

“I’m happy about it, too, but I’m worried about being a mother. It’s brand new, and I’m afraid I won’t be good at it. It just seems so sudden, and I’ve been struggling to fully accept it.”

Hearing her concerns, I knew she had a right to them. Neither of us knew what it was like to have children, and it was a daunting idea.

Yet, I felt a desire to protect her and shield her from those negative thoughts. I couldn’t let her think it was nothing short of beautiful and rewarding.

“This will be an opportunity for both of us to learn the ropes, and we’ll do it together. I don’t believe either of us will be bad at it. You are my Luna, and being blessed with a child is a gift from the Goddess. No matter what happens or the stage of our bond, I will always cherish both of you,” I said to her, hoping she could feel every ounce of my sincerity. “We’ll have the chance to work on ourselves and our relationship, but we have to both be willing to achieve that. We need to put the past behind us and work together moving forward. If we’re on the same page, then everything else will follow. Is that something you want?”

As Jane met my gaze, emotion filled her eyes, and she nodded for me. My heart squeezed.

“That being said, I will spend every day regretting how I treated you before, and if I have to repent to the Goddess, then so be it. You never deserved a moment of it, and I shouldn’t have let my pride and ego get in the way. I will always be sorry for it,” I began, hoping to give her some sort of closure. “I have seen you blossom and grow since you’ve been here, and I can’t describe how much pride that instills in me. The pack is very pleased with you, and I know they couldn’t ask for a better Luna. If you let me, I promise to be a better mate and always value our bond. We didn’t have the greatest start, but it will never be too late for us to make up for it. I need you, and I don’t want you to ever forget that.”
