I was thankful I knew most of them by then, and it made the events much easier to handle without constantly having someone by my side. I could even point out his alpha friends from a crowd, and that felt like a victory to me.

“There she is,” Levi said, extending a hand toward me as he approached with a wide, proud smile.

There was a small uproar of excitement as I walked across the patio stones. I tried my best not to shrink under the sudden attention. I was the alpha’s mate and needed to get used to having eyes on me eventually.

My hand brushed against his palm as he carefully took it, and I was gently pulled toward him. He paused to whisper in my ear, “You look like a goddess in your own right.”

A shiver ran down my spine at the soft fan of his breath against my skin, triggering that sensitivity in me. Those fickle restraints holding my longing in barely stood a chance against Levi and his unwavering appeal.

“Thank you,” I murmured, feeling somewhat shy beneath his confident exterior.

With an affirming smile, Levi guided me through the backyard until we reached the head of the fire pit, and he claimed everyone’s attention effortlessly.

“I wanted to thank you all for coming here tonight on such short notice, but I promise the news is well worth it,” he began, looking the happiest I had ever seen him as he held my hand still.

There was another murmur of building excitement from everyone, and I caught Nati’s knowing expression, along with Ivy’s curiosity.

“I’m pleased to announce that Jane is with child,” Levi said at last, erupting in a bold smile of his own.

A mutual gasp seemed to come from the pack members, all immediately looking overjoyed by the news.

“That’s incredible!”

“And so soon?”

“The Goddess smiles on you and your family.”

Every response we got was just as positive and supportive as the last, and one by one, the members approached both of us to offer their congratulations.

It still felt strange to be front and center, and I wasn't used to accepting that kindness without any kind of catch or trick. But as it continued, I grew to accept it and find my bearings.

“I can’t believe you’re pregnant! My best friend and Luna, growing a beautiful life inside her,” Ivy said, eyes welling with tears as she pulled me in for a deep hug before she took both my hands in hers and sniffled. “I’m so happy for you, Janey.”

Having my best friend acknowledge it made the pregnancy feel even more real, and I couldn’t help the mutual tears that sprung into my eyes.

“I’m so glad you’re here to celebrate this with me,” I said to her, smiling and feeling more at ease with everything. “Thank you for being here.”

She smiled and wiped her tears away. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Grateful for everything, I found it hard not to burst into happy tears as the night continued. With Levi’s acceptance of the pregnancy, along with the packs and the praise we had received, I was riding that high all the way through. I felt more secure and sure of myself, knowing that nobody there had any ill will or malice towards me.

The pack was warm and welcoming, and it was easy to settle into my place next to Levi in our chairs.

Music played through the backyard as everyone grabbed something to eat and drink, and many stories were exchanged in the meantime. Levi was in incredible spirits as he overlooked it all, seeming proud of me and his people.

I almost felt like I had been seated on a throne next to a king, paid the respect I was owed, and treated like royalty. Every so often, one of the women would approach me and offer their well wishes, along with any tips or tricks they knew for enduring a pregnancy.

Sat in that seat, there was no missing how differently my life had panned out from the depressing course I had initially been on. I found my mate against all odds, who happened to be an alpha. I was pregnant with his child, and we had a wonderful group of people to support us.

That kindness and generosity they offered so easily never existed in Sam’s pack. It was cutthroat and self-serving, not the ideal place to try to cultivate a strong sense of community.

It was hard to understand how I got into that position and how much of an improvement it was.

Eventually, several familiar faces approached, and Levi immediately brightened. When he stood, I instinctively did the same.

“You made it!” He said, watching as his best friends joined the space. “I hope you didn’t miss me at the office too much today.”

“Given the occasion, we’ll let you off the hook this time,” Sebastian said, offering him a supportive hand on his shoulder. Then, he looked at me and flashed his charming smile, offering me a side hug. “Congratulations on the pregnancy, by the way. Just so you know, Levi didn’t miss the chance to tell us immediately.”
