“That’s no pressure,” he mutters under his breath. The true fear in his gaze has me shaken but I’m trying to keep a level head. They need me to be strong.

“Which way should we head?” Jayce asks.

This place is massive and that’s one reason we enjoyed it, but right now, I hate it.

“Let’s head to the place in the forest where we found the tunnel. I think there was more there than we found,” Eli tells us quickly, already veering that way as he and Jayce walk side by side.

The walk isn’t easy in this much darkness but we have little choice. My eyes sweep around us, ever vigilant, but I couldn’t see past the beam of the flashlight if I wanted to.

Jayce stops and turns toward the biggest tree in the row, “This way,” he says pointing his beam of light to our left.

“Are you getting some emotions?” I question as I follow him.

“Yes, it’s strange, but I’m thinking it’s going to lead us to Raven,” he says in careful steps.

“What are you feeling?” Eli asks, moving closer to Jayce.

“Fear mixed with elation,” he says calmly.

“You okay?” I ask, scanning the area with my light.

“No, but anything for Raven right?” he states, when there is a crunch to our left.

“You’ll never find her,” a disembodied voice taunts.

Eli stops and so do Jayce and me. We open our ears to try and get a grasp on where the voice is coming from.

“We will find you,” Eli prompts, trying to get him to speak again. “We’ll never stop searching for her and you.” The venom at the end garners a string of laughter.

To my left, there is a rustle of leaves and I glimpse a sliver of silver before I’m knocked to the ground. The air leaves my lungs as I hit the rocky ground.

It is Earl on top of me. “You’ll never see her again,” he hisses as he wraps his fingers around my throat, squeezing tightly. “Every one of you will die tonight.”

Eli and Jayce are frantically pulling at his hands around my throat. Great, I’m going to die again. I struggle trying to throw him off me but my vision starts to blur as I can’t get any air.

There is a blast and the hands on me go slack and a heavy weight hits me.

“You guys, okay?” Leo asks.

“We are now, but we still need to find Raven. I think we’re getting close to where he took her. He said we’d never find her,” Eli tells him.

The three of them pull the neighbor off me and I sit up, gasping for breath and rubbing at my sore throat.

“You okay, Lucien?” Jayce asks, offering me a hand.

I take it and squeak out a, “Yes.”

“Are you getting any more emotions, Jayce?” Eli asks.

“Same ones, so Earl was not alone in this,” Jayce says grimly.

“I bet it’s his good for nothing son. Those two always rubbed me the wrong way,” Leo states with disgust. I feel better having his gun and anger on our side. Plus, having a sheriff involved means not having to explain the dead body we just walked away from.

“Jayce, lead the way. Time to get Raven back,” Eli says, pushing him forward.

Leo walks next to Jayce, Eli and I trail behind, keeping a better lookout for any more surprises to pop out.

“How did Earl get on top of you, Lucien?” Leo asks, glancing back at me over his shoulder.
