A little girl’s laughter echoed through the halls as we slipped outside.

Raven

We beat Kassie to the restaurant. After the encounter this afternoon we were more than a little shaken and on edge.

If she wanted our help, we needed answers.

Time wasn’t on our side, nor was I going to risk our lives in that place for someone else. They may as well burn it to the ground.

My stomach churned at the thought. There were children there. They were victims and trapped in those halls.

But why?

The door swung open and Kassie came in with a burst of fall wind. She looked around before spotting us, pausing at the looks on our faces.

A look of worry passed, but there was no guilt. She didn't know what we’d find there.

“I take it the initial visit didn’t go well?” she asked as she sat, setting a tote bag on the floor next to her. She shrugged out of her coat as she waited for answers. “Hit me with the news. Do I need to throw in the towel on this one?”

“I’m not sure,” I admitted, refusing to lie to her. “There’s something strange going on, more than just a simple haunting. We need to know everything you do about that building.”

“Well, after we parted ways, I did a bit more digging and added a few news clippings,” she admitted. Reaching down she opened the tote and pulled out a thick folder. She flipped the folder open and pushed clippings our way.

“Holy shit,” I breathed out.

“We found a hallway that had been locked off and blocked from the ‘newer’ side of the girls’ home,” I admitted. “This makes so much sense now. We found a padded room.”

We’d all agreed to keep the details that would make us sound crazy, from her.

“Yeah, it was an asylum before they closed down. Too many deaths and with being state funded and understaffed it was dissolved into other hospitals in the state.”

Kassie passed over more information, detailing the move and the alleged investigation into the dead patients.

This place had a dark history, that much was clear. But we’d seen enough residual hauntings to know this wasn’t that simple.

Something was going on here…

“She took it.”

The little girl's words echoed in my head and my gut was telling me that this was at the root of our problem. We needed this background info, but our real answers would come from the ghosts lingering in the halls of that godforsaken place.

Why didn't she mention any of this before? I didn't like going into a hunt blind but that was on me. I was excited to get out of town after the whole case with my cousin. That and a hunt always spiked my adrenaline.

"Did you think if you kept from us that we wouldn't help you?" I asked.

A wave of shame washed over Kassie's face, "I wasn't sure, to be honest, I thought about lighting a match and walking away."

"Jayce is our research wizard. I'm sure that he can dig something up on this spirit," I told her with confidence.

"I have a few more files here, but I'm not sure if there is anything in here that will help," she said, piling a few more folders onto the table.

"Anything will help," Jayce spoke up. "Is there a town library close?"
