I trust him to listen, but what I love even more is that he is making sure I have the time to fully grasp what she has to say.

I just hope it’s my sister; I can’t bear another deceptive scheme from my stepfather.

As I sit in my bedroom, I reach for my laptop and rest it on my lap. Taking a deep breath, I press the power button, feeling excited at the thought of hearing Ava’s voice.

My foot taps as I impatiently wait for the old computer to boot up.

A heavy silence hangs in the room, the air thick with hope.

The laptop’s screen flickers to life, illuminating my face on the screen with an eerie glow.

A knot tightens in my stomach. The weight of the USB in my hand feels almost unbearable, wondering what I’m about to unravel. But more than that ... hearing my sister’s voice.

My mind races, uncertain of what awaits me on this tiny device. Is it her? Or some nefarious scheme of my stepfather?

With trembling hands, I insert the USB into the laptop’s port, holding my breath as the computer asks me a question.

What is the name of your favorite rabbit?

I smile as I answer:

Bunnykins

We had six rabbits as children, but Bunnykins was mine.

What is the name of my favorite rabbit?

My heart races as I answer:

Peter

How many children do you want?

I’ll answer how I’ve answered her since I found out I was an omega. Three boys and three girls. That answer has changed since we last spoke, but Ava doesn’t know that.

Six.

How many do I want?

I answer:

None.

That surprised me when we had the conversation a few years ago. The time we awaited our fate, and spoke of the dreams we had. And despite being tied to chairs and our freedoms taken from us, Ava didn’t change her mind. Regardless of being an omega, she never saw herself as a natural omega. She was always too free for that and thought I was crazy for wanting six children.

Congratulations. You’re in!

I read the message plastered on the screen just before my laptop informed me that new files had been detected.

My nerves fray, but I can’t let fear of the unknown dictate my actions. I have to trust that this is my sister.

I accept them and watch as a series of folders appear on the screen, my fingers itching to explore their contents.

Determination surges through my veins as I open the first folder. Inside, I find a collection of photographs, memories frozen in time of me, her and our sisters, all with our dear father.

I slam my hand on my chest as I calm my racing heart.

I scroll through what Ava gave me, knowing this is her letting me know I can trust she is the sender. Only she would have sent the moments our dad had captured of us when we were children.
