“If you have such a connection, why are you letting me lead?” he asks.

“I’ve always had a rapport with her, but when she finds out she’s my omega, I don’t know how she’ll react.”

A smile tugs at the corners of Gabe’s lips. “Hopefully you’re right,” he says, with a little more conviction in his tone. “Maybe we have a chance. Most omegas only want their scent-matched alpha.”

“Even if he’s forbidden to her?” I ask. “And much older.”

Gabe stares into the distance before turning back to me and shrugs his shoulders. “Now you sound unsure.”

“It’s plagued me for years.” I sigh. “But once we show her we’re worth choosing, despite all of the reasons it shouldn’t work.”

“But after what happened to her, she’s jaded.” All of a sudden, he doesn’t appear too keen again. He sighs. “And we’re trying to buy her, of all things.”

“She’ll see that as a victory over her stepfather. That she is the one who decides. It’s empowering her.”

He sighs. “But we’re still giving her the wrong message to begin with.” Gabe looks at me, his brow furrowing in uncertainty.

“I want her, Gabe. But I want her to not walk away when she finds out it is me. The money will stop that.”

“You really think so?” he asks, his voice quivering with a mix of fear and longing. “Maybe it will have her running to the hills.”

I swallow. Knowing there’s a chance of that happening.

Her car stops at the end of the long winding driveway, her blinker showing that she is turning left toward the city.

“And what do we do about Jake?” Gabe asks. “I tried to warn him off, but he is adamant that he and Ella are a package. If you want Ella, he’ll have to become part of our pack.”

“He’s just a kid.”

“Yeah. But he’s a kid in love and his alpha is very protective of her. I told Ella he wasn’t mature enough for her yet, but it’s a lie. Jake’s already prepared to do so much for her.”

I clench my fists, the frustration coursing through my veins. I can share Ella with Gabe–he’s my pack mate. That’s easy, but Jake isn’t. Yet, I know he is prepared to do anything for her. “Our omega and her welfare comes before my own.”

If Jake is to become part of this pack, he needs to know that Ella is not his alone.

Gabe senses my irritation and places a comforting hand on my shoulder. “Calm down, Walker.” His voice is calm. “We’ll figure this out, but we need to approach the Jake situation delicately.”

I take a deep breath and try to compose myself. Gabe is right—we can’t let our emotions get the best of us. Ella deserves more than that.

“We’ll speak to Jake,” I say firmly, determination settling in my voice. “Maybe we can make him understand.”

Gabe nods in agreement. “It’s worth a shot. We’ll explain our intentions … Our actual intentions.”

“But...” I hesitate as I watch her car disappear in the distance. “She doesn’t have a scent match with him. She might reject him once her smell comes back.”

“Not that you know of. But then he never mentioned anything about her perfume.” Gabe smiles. “Talking about scents. The effects of her anti-heat vaccination are diminishing. I could smell her scent underneath the bitter coating of the vaccination.”

Anger bubbles up inside of me every time I think of her stepfather. At least her medication is wearing off.

I shake off my frustrations and ask, “Do you think she’ll accept?”

He lifts his shoulders. “She might because of the business,” Gabe says. “She wants it to work, no matter the cost.”

I spin to him and watch the smile curve on his face. “So you think she’ll accept the offer?”

“I know she will.” Gabe stares at me for a moment. There’s a look of uncertainty flashing across his face. “But will she accept us forever?”

“She doesn’t know it’s forever yet. She’s been offered one million dollars a day. And this is an omega with nothing but ambition driving her.”
